They did meet the real Mondo, during Faerber's run. But..uh...he was a bad guy, and fought them alongside Black Tom and Juggernaut.

I've wanted Penance/Hollow to be in a story with Wolverine for so long, it's kind of bittersweet to see her photobombing a cover with him on it -- since that's actually Monet-as-Penance.

It'll be interesting to see if Monet is really in this, considering she's one of the few Muslim superheroes Marvel has aside from Kamala Khan.

I really think Hickman did Monet dirty by giving her the Penance form. She already had an awesome plethora of powers and now she always appears as Penance. Probably because she looks cool like that, but you know.

Plus I would have loved to see the return of the real Penance.

And he never quite explained it or delved into it. She's just now Penance just bc. I know Tini tried to play with it for the short time she had her in X-Corp but it still felt unsatisfactory. It reminds me of when Bendis made Bobby gay. Make a major change with a character and then not doing anything with it, instead leaving it up to other writers if they do or dont want to touch it

Exactly, this should have been a big deal for Monet. And it’s been thrown in there. :/ Maybe someday we’ll get a proper follow-up.

I really hate the way Bendis made Bobby gay and all the lack of follow up in his run. It was done, but it could have been done more tastefully and honestly not in a set of copy+paste panels.

Even more confusing is the twins showed up in an early issue of the New Mutants. Probably a Hickman issue? Maybe he was going to cover it there.

Yes it was the first issue that we saw them in Penance form in the background. Hickman wrote it. Still no follow up to that anywhere

Inorite? I thought that the first time I saw the Gen X bros together in last year's Hellfire Gala, plus Mondo teaming up with Chamber in Krakoa Era "New Mutants."

The one they were friends with in the '90s was a clone, but they also met the real one later on as a villain teamed up with Black Tom Cassidy, like Bunch of Coconuts said. And he was not very nice to Generation X there!

However, considering the clone had all of the original Mondo's memories, and THAT Mondo got along well with Generation X, it stands to reason that the real Mondo would get along with them, too, once he got to know them.

That's the logic I'm going with here, lol.

Remember, Krakoa is an era where villains' pasts are forgiven and that clearly includes Mondo (it even includes Emplate! Eep!).

Monet was awesome enough without sandwiching in the whole Penance thing again.

And I also was looking forward to seeing the real Penance return in Krakoa's utopian era.

Instead, artists get to use Penance as cover bait without having to use the real Penance/Hollow. Devious. ;P

Tini never freakin' explained anything very well, either, haha. And her series got cut short into a mini-series, so we don't really know if she was going to eventually explain what Hickman never explained...

Interesting comparison, I can definitely see parallels: The way Bendis made Bobby gay was awful -- I like the change, considering the decades of hinting at it, but the way he did it... Like you said, just made the change and left it up to other writers to actually write a good story about it. Meanwhile, Hickman just said "Guess what? Monet is Penance now" and left it to everyone else to try to figure out what that means for both characters.

Wait, mini Penance twins cameo was in a Hickman issue, too?? I never noticed who the writer there was... Did the artist do that without getting permission or did Hickman specifically say to do it?? And what even is "it" -- why can all these people suddenly become Penances?? XD

Tini Howard was asked about this and her answer was so awful that I'm kind of glad she didn't get to finish whatever she was going to say in X-Corp. Basically, that someone probably convinced a couple of shapeshifter kids to play a mean prank on Monet. So, luckily, that's not the canon explanation.

They never explained who this Mondo is on Krakoa. My headcanon is that the Mondo from the original run was the real Mondo (though manipulated by BT) and the one that showed up at the end was a clone.

On further reflection... that would also be fine with me, but we'd definitely have to go back in ComicVine and all the wikis to remove that "appearance" of the M Twins, lol.

And we'd still need an explanation for why Monet can turn into Penance. ^_^;; They've implied it was from the resurrection process, but then when did Monet die before Krakoa Era and where's Penance/Hollow and... so many questions.

Also, FYI, I just found out Monet has an amusing one-panel cameo in Immortal X-Men #1. I think I'd like to see more of Kieron Gillen's take on Monet... and given that he's writing both Emma Frost and Monet in this, it could be cool if he someday wrote a Generation X book.

Maybe Monet spent so much time with Penance that it imprinted on her. Her brother and and sisters are easily able to merge with one another but also as a side effect of all the time she spent in Penance she has a residual ability to merge into Penance form??? Maybe? Kinda like Rogue but it isn't instantaneous and it could take years of a bond to create this kind of a phenomenon with her powers.

I also like this theory that those little Penance's were a hole changelings.

The real Penance is still out there (cue X-Files theme).

Maybe Penance is really the St.Croix mom who ended up getting stuck in her Penance form from all of her essence being drained by Marius. That would make sense why Monet was able to merge with her.

Well, wasn't it explained that Proteus accidentally gave Laura an andamantium skeleton because he assumed all "Wolverines" had one? That could be a No-Prize explanation for Monet/Penance, if no canon one is ever given. He made a mistake.
