Nats 9, Phillies 3. To paraphrase the legendary Meat Loaf, four out of five ain’t bad.

So Gerrit Cole loses a no-hit bid and a chance at the victory, but the Yankees still win over Tampa Bay.

Ohtani has 8 RBI, but it's not enough as the Angels lose 12-11 to the Royals.

More Angels news, LA starting pitcher Reid Detmers, who just six weeks ago tossed a no hitter for the Halos, was optioned to AAA as he has had 6 terrible starts and no wins since. Detmers is 0-2 with a 5.67 ERA in his six starts since the no-no and has allowed eight homers and yielded 13 walks over those 27 innings in those 6 starts, and found himself back on the minor league bus trips.

"The Red Sox look like a threat to be reckoned with -- and nothing like the team that started off slow to begin the season. Nick Pivetta seems like one of the best pitchers in baseball recently, with a 1.77 ERA and 61 strikeouts over 61 innings in his last nine starts. Prior to the season, Boston's front office said a leap for Pivetta was crucial for the team's success, and the righty's recent triumph has coincided with a victorious stretch for Boston" - ESPN.com

The Red Sox have surged over the last 36 games, however only 6 of those games have been against teams that can be considered playoff contenders. In their next 36 games, 33 of those 36 games are against playoff contending teams. They've chewed up bad teams to turn their record around and look like world-beaters against bad teams. The next stretch of 36 games, against good teams, will show whether they are contenders or pretenders. It may also determine if they will be buyers or sellers when the trade deadline comes around. If they can be anything better than a .500 team against the good teams they will face in the next stretch, they might be a Wild card team this season. If they can't beat good teams, then they will turn out to be the team we saw at the beginning of the season. They are going to have to beat the Blue Jays in Toronto without their new closer and lead-off hitter because neither is vaccinated and cannot go to Toronto to play.

The most recent stretch has been nice but meaningless. The test is in front of them, not behind them.

Here is a look at that 36-game schedule though Aug. 3:
    June 24-26, at Guardians.
    June 27-29, at Blue Jays.
July 1-3, at Cubs (only soft spot during this stretch).
    July 4-6, home against Rays.
    July 7-10, home against Yankees.
    July 11-14, at Rays.
    July 15-17, at Yankees.
July 22-24, home against Blue Jays.
    July 25-28, home against Guardians.
    July 29-31, home against Brewers.
    Aug. 1-3, at Astros.

Yes I agree with most of what you said. The next stretch is going to be very tough.

I am just happy they are fun to watch at this point. I hope they keep it up. The Yankees are winning the AL East no doubt about that.

The Sox will be a Wildcard team.

We've overtaken the Rays during a stretch where they are decimated by injuries. They are starting to get healthy. I wouldn't count on being ahead of them for long if they get their groove back. So it will be a matter of can the 4th best team in the AL East be better than every other non-division winning team in the AL?

My Phillies managed all of two runs in two interleague games against Texas, then touched sub 2.00 ERA Joe Musgrove for half a dozen in a win over the Fathers last night. Go figure. Funny game this baseball.

Interesting match up for Boston tonight going against Cleveland. Pivetta is on the mound for the Sox and he has been great.

Well Judge settled with the Yankees pre-arbitration, so he won't have to hear the Yanks tear him down in the arbitration hearing, so that's a step in the Yanks favor in signing him to an extension, but we'll see.
