That's assuming the person attacked him with that in mind, it could very well just be an action of a disturbed individual similar to Mark Chapman's murder of John Lennon or John Hinkley Jr's attack on Reagan.

I don't condone spreading hate to any group of people however, being a comedian means to make jokes about everything and everyone. If you can't laugh at yourself sometimes, I am not sure what to say. I don't think Dave has any ill will towards trans people. I also don't think anyone should be above jokes or criticism as long as there is no like real malice behind it.

He was armed when he attacked him. Getting to actually use his weapon doesn't matter. He had it on him
