I thought Immortal Hulk was pretty good for that, insofar as exploring just why Banner/Hulk couldn't or wouldn't stay dead. That aside, the part that ties into AXE: Judgment Day is likely that the dead Celestial the Avengers have been shacking up in since Jason Aaron's run started has been somehow revived or reanimated and is passing judgment on the whole population of Earth to determine whether or not it just wipes out the whole planet.

On the one hand it's a well they go to perhaps too often, sequels and callbacks to a 50 year old story. On the other hand, nobody would ever completely get over something like this happening, it would always haunt them.
