I guess it just doesn't make sense. It comes across as needless criticism. Gambit may not be as powerful as Jean. but he's still a very effective combatant. And Magik is the textbook definition of a closer. If there's one X-Man over the last decade who you send specifically to get crap done, it's Magik. Heck, there have been times when the X-Men's strategy consisted solely of 'have Magik' or 'let Magik do everything.' And she could be much more flashy if she used more spells instead of getting down and dirty with her sword. And it's not like Jean is treated as an instant-win button all the time. There wouldn't be much point to the stories if she was.
I enjoyed this but wow is this series violent.

Nah, the recap for 31 joked that after she hit out the guy’s throat that Nature Girl proceeded to eat him which I could totally see happening in these books to be completely honest. At least they finally explained why Nature Girl is nuts even if the answer is just Hickman’s grandma brigade
With that in mind it can feel a bit like the writer wants to validate Jean Grey compared to characters they consider more "respect" for some reason. Perhaps thinking the reader only knows her from movies or cartoons (or it's their own only point of reference for the character) Which runs the risk of making those lines sound less like Maggot is in awe and more like he is the writers mouth piece to tell the reader how great Jean is.

Jean Grey in the words of Walt Whitman, from his masterpiece Leaves of Grass, "Song of Myself" (51 and 52):
"Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"
"Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged, Missing me one place search another, I stop somewhere waiting for you."
