I actually like seeing racist people get bothered...so it's a plus.
But they're not just calling out racist trolls. They're calling out anybody that dislikes changes to the characters.

Fandom can be pretty picky when it comes to adapting their favorite characters just right. I've seen people get upset over characters having a different shirt than they normally wear or a slightly different haircut. Don't believe me? Go to the Batman section and start a discussion about whether Batman needs a yellow oval around his bat symbol or not. Or whether Superman needs trunks. Calling them racist is just strawmaning them.

They don't like any kind of change.
    Somebody changes the character race.
    Now suddenly they're racist.

I'm not saying there aren't racists that are complaining, but let's not pretend that everybody that dislikes a redesign is a racist.

What bothers me is I feel like Kaling wanted nothing to do with Scooby-Doo beyond using the iconography to get attention and it'll probably show.

I probably shouldn't have entered this conversation, as I don't really know what is going on multimedia wise with the show or the backlash, but....

I am one of those people who do not like my characters changed in any fashion whether it's a haircut or costume design. I was cool when they gave Aquaman long hair because he isn't one of my favs, but if he was.....oh man watch out.

I tend to be apolitical, but I don't like Trump, I think the wall is a stupid idea, and I'm generally pro immigration and multiculturalism, so to be called a racist by political zealots because you simply don't want any changes to a character you love, is really....depressing.

As for trunks. I don't really care what they do to Superman, but I don't really want to see the return of the yellow oval on Batman's costume on a regular basis, it looks cheesy, a relic of the past that should have remained discarded.

If your problem is specifically that they changed the race...then that is by the very definition of the word racist. They're really is no getting around that. And I've never really bought the, "It's any change, I'm about fidelity to the source!" because it's never a loud back lash when it's something other than race. There wasn't any massive fan uproar for instance when the Riverdale show on the CW didn't have Jughead wearing his signature hat. Or when say Odie was just a regular dog instead of a stylized cartoon like Garfield. Or that the Targarians don't have the correct eye color. I could go on and on.

But you change the race? Suddenly it's a huge controversy.

    Why is that I wonder?

No. That's not. That isn't even close to how it works.

You don't believe it so it can't be true. Anyone that disagrees with you is a liar and a racists. You're certainly a hate filled individual, aren't you?

I'm not hate filled at all, I've just never seen anyone make post after post on messages boards about a character change other than race. And I've never seen hundreds of youtube videos reacting to a change other than race. I've never seen people say they were going to boycott a project for a change other than race...

    Have you?

Dragonball evolution had a boat load of racist crap and oh man, the star wars sequels? Tons of racist scum. And the rest don't come anywhere near the level of pushback that changes like Velmas race has...it's not even funny how bad your comparisons are. You're proving my point not refuting it.

The pushback to DmC was so much worse than any backlash I've seen from Velma. It remains contentious to this very day. There was no race swap in sight.

Beast wars comes to mind. "truck not munkey!" was all over the transformers sites with a group of fans who hated optimus not a truck. Group hated animal forms over car forms. Today beast wars is pretty loved by most transformers fans. Ironic the beast wars fans had their turn with beast machines that had so much backlash the writer got death threats from some awful fans and vowed never to do anything transformers again!

Trukk not Munky" (or "Truk not Munky") is a phrase used by Transformers fans derisively towards those that complain about changes to the mythos.

Then there is wally vs barry and hal vs kyle from dc over the years. Ironic thing is none of them are the originals!

Some ninja turtle fans hate the jokey 80s turtles over the dark and gritty comic ones and dragon gt got alot of hate in its day from some fans.

Teen titans go is pretty hated by some.

Star trek vs the next generation lead to fights in the 90s. (al even spoofed that in his white and nerdy video)

Wow, imagine getting death threats over "Transformers".

I actually remember that controversy. I think the writer had to cancel some public appearances it because of that.

I am going to intervene here by suggesting you disengage with the said individual.

The person you are chatting with seems very politically charged, and is probably out to try to make you look guilty by association. (Meaning by just defending the topic you are now somehow suspect to people on this forum)

I abhore racism like most normal individuals do, and try to avoid using the term race because I do not think it is scientifically sound terminology at present, as well as referring to other members of humanity as "scum" Genuinely racist people need to be rehabilitated so they can operate like normal people in a multicultural society.

I was indoctrinated into far left socialist/anarchist ideology as a teenager, and I would never have gotten out of it, if people just wrote me off as scum...which a lot of people did.

That aside, Yes people freak out about the littlest characters changes (I don't watch much tv shows, so I have to go with comic books)

    1. I boycotted a Green Arrow run for 10 years because they shaved off his goatee. It bothered me that much.

    2. I had friends who boycotted Aquaman in the 90's because they hated the long hair, open chest and hook hand. (I personally loved it, but I'm not a hardcore Aquaman fan)

    3. I know Superman fans who got enraged by the Electric Blue costume

    4. Legion of Super Heroes, my biggest issue with Bendis Legion is not the skin pigmentation changes (though the Lightning Lad one bothers me) it's that Timber Wolf looks like he's 300 pounds!!!

    5. And I'm not being funny about the yellow circle on Batman's chest. I don't mind if it is a darker shade, but I don't want to see the campy pre Frank Miller 1960's Batman costume returning.

The list goes on and on.

I am sick and tired of politically charged zealots, accusing a non political, non suspecting normal people (who are probably pro immigration & pro multiculturalism in their everyday lives) of racism because they don't want any changes to their favourite characters.....which just happens to also include skin pigmentation in addition to costumes, hair, gender swaps, body images, you name it.

    Thank you very much.
