    Default ASM 3 (#897) Discussion

Surely better than Issue 2, but I'm still extremely confused. How is Peter locked by simple handcuffs? He should be able to completely destroy them and kick all of Tombstone's goons in the face. I liked Lonnie's memory tale (and I think it's a new side of it that was never shown) and the glimpse into Randy and Janice's vacation. But that's it. Romita's art is the worst I've seen since the first Issue (I'm a big fan) and Tombstone's plan is stupid, considering he looked perfectly fine with Randy dating his daughter. Paul paying Peter's bills? Convenient, but I think that mystery is going to be a loooooong storyline. In the end, I have very mixed feelings.

God this is dragging out. This literally felt like an issue where nothing happened and could have been skipped. Plus, Peter basically begging Tombstone at the end was just pathetic. This is the same guy who has taken on villains who are Avenger level yet Tombstone is giving him trouble. Hell, they don’t even bother giving a reason he can’t break those chains despite having the strength to bench 10 tons. If this is supposed to win back the crowd after Beyond, they’re doing a terrible job.

Yeeeeeaaaah, I am out. This is just suffering porn at this point. Really not feeling this "fresh start", like, at all. And I for sure don't need "MJ with another man" for 100th time, I've had enough of that with BND and Slott.

I’m enjoying the story and art, so far. Haven’t kept tabs on Spider-Man in a while. Tuned in for Zeb Wells and Romita. Zeb’s strong work on Hellions, and it’s twists, inspires me to wait and see. So far, the character work is doing its thing while teasing there’s more going on than meets the eye. Romita’s art calls to mind all that I love about his signature style. He clearly knows how to tell a story, visually. The facial expressions and body language in this issue were a highlight for me.

Too bad. You missed out on far better comics.

Zeb's been on the book since Beyond and whatever talent he had on Hellions deserted him. He's always been a terrible fit for Spider-Man dating back to Shed. Don't waste your money. Buy Spencer trades.

Tell me how Janice's weird googly eyes at Randy for four panels straight was a highlight.

Wells on Hellions was a good fit. Here he is so far misscast. His tricks and twists are hurting him. He has created a unwarranted mystery with MJ and Paul after Spencer’s run that tried to rehabilitate much of the mess that has happened after OMD. If he just focused on writing Peter, MJ and the rest without the time skips and whatever horrible gruesome thing the are setting up with Dark Web and Hellfire gala for MJ then he would be on much more solid ground. Now he is betting so much that this mystery will land that it’s is threatening to drag down his strong parts too. His stint on Beyond didn’t endear him either. He needs to be on darker titles if this is his vision.

All this talk about Hellions, but what about THE Hellion? Why isn't he here, helping his favorite Spider-Man? Whenever Hellion's not in a panel, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Hellion?"

So does Randy and Jannie get married or is this just a plot point to remove them from the book?

Also agreed re: buying the Spencer trades. Also Mary Jane and Black Cat. Or Jed MacKay's Black Cat run. Basically, anything except books with Slott's or Wells's names on them (or Kelly Thompson's Beyond issues. The other Beyond issues were...fine.)

Here's the thing: As a writer, Wells writes morally charcoal gray @$$hats who are casually and graphically violent. That works in a series like Hellions, where no one is an outright hero and casual, graphic violence is a feature, not a bug. Also, not really a series aimed at kids.

That does NOT work in Spider-Man. It's rather...insert your word of choice....that Marvel considers a loving, committed relationship to be off-putting to kids, but not scenes of massacred thugs with blood leaking from their heads in ASM 2 and Spider-Man bound up and getting graphically and bloodily beaten up in close-up panels in ASM 3. The trade collection of Wells's ASM 1 -5 is recommended for ages 8 - 18. There is no way I would hand the last two issues of ASM to an eight year old, not unless I knew the kid very well and could discuss the issues with them afterwards.

I have a fondness for JRJR, but I agree his faces are not the reason why.

It's a flimsy reason to make Tombstone go after Robbie, even though Spencer established that while neither of the dads were fully onboard with the relationships, they also weren't going to commit violence over it.

But Wells either didn't read Spencer's run or doesn't care.

Read Spencer's run. It gets way worse in the last 10 or so issues, but the first half is great to me. Peter and Spidey are greatly written and there's a joyful atmosphere that makes everything easy and nice to read. This run is completely different as of now, but it's just too weird and it feels off.

Paul apparently has a temper, huh? Why is Mary Jane with him again? Wasn’t her having a abusive father one of the reasons she hid her real self for so long?

Yup. I wanted to like this despite early misgivings but I think the writing is on the wall: this run just isn't for me.

If I were a betting man I’d say that the wedding will never happen and Wells is gonna break them up.

It's just useless. I mean, I have no idea, why Wells thinks that suffering porn with Spider-Man in 2022 is a great idea.
And the problem is, it seems like the whole point of this run is just make people hate it from the beginning. It looks like some kind of massive, passive-aggressive fan trolling. For whom it is written, who needs it, I have no idea.
But if they want more people to just give up on the character, I guess that's the way to go.
