Default The reason why Darkseid is DC’s most successful and overused cosmic villain?

The reason why he is and probably always will be DC’s best cosmic threat character is because he is in fact a “character” and not a plot device. Most big cosmic threats (The Anti-Monitor for example) were created for events or crossovers, they have very little in the way of personality and are pretty much just a cool design and vague power set in search of a personality( some eventually do find a personality but it’s usually well after the fact ) Darkseid on the other hand really benefits from being the primary villain in the whole Fourth World mythology first and foremost. It gives him an actual personality, backstory, family history etc. So when he combats the heroes of the DC he isn’t some amorphous evil power blob but is in fact a character.

That reasoning sounds good to me.

I just like that before he became the "end all, be all" he was taken down by the X-Men and Teen Titans. (Pheonix helped)

Being the Big Bad on "Superfriends" and the awesome epicness of Legion's "Great Darkness Saga" also helped elevate his standing as being more than relegated to Fourth World stories, I would think.

To be fair, the only competition he has are probably Krona and Brainiac.

He also knows to show a little thigh. The best villains come in short skirts.

I think Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen have a lot to do with it too. I knew who Darkseid was before The Great Darkness Saga, but that story made me in awe of him.

What are we using to measure success? I would argue that the most successful were Dominus and Circe.

They aren't. I like Circe and she isn't even a cosmic villain.

What about Trigon? Starbreaker? (from the Justice League), Mongul? How do they rank against Darksaid?

Circe any time she channeled Hecate's power begs to differ.

I don't recall those guys requiring all hands on deck to defeat them. It would be cool if they gave us a story where Trigon became more of a DCU threat, but he's still relegated to being a Titans character, imo.
