Default Wolverine #22: Bad Gamble review

Logan and Wade are still in the adamantium cage to open the issue while Maverick and Weasel are putting together the components of the brief case everyone is after. Weasel figures out how to put everything together and it basically a chibi version of Danger which immediately starts going berserk and tearing up Weasel's lab. While Maverick and Weasel argue whether to destroy or capture mini-danger Logan is keeping an eye on them, eventually Weasel enters his master code to lock down the lab but Danger blasts a hole through the wall so it didn't matter. Logan does a bit of "field surgery" and cuts Wade into a lesser version of himself, he then chucks him toward the control panel and tells Wade the master code to unlock the cage, the code is ABC-123 lol. Logan doesn't have time to put Wade back together and he's off on the chase. After unsuccessfully catching anyone in the casino he steals a Lambo and has a change of heart about Wade and rolls up to pick him up. Wade literally taped himself back together and hops in. Logan cuts Wade up again so he can hold down the gas pedal in the car (unnecessary but pretty funny) because Danger Baby has taken flight so the plan is to crash the car at high speed to launch himself into the air. The plan works and Logan is able to dismantle the baby bot, just then Blind Al pulls up in a car says come with me if you want to live (not really but you get the idea). Blind Al drives them to her hide out where they learn that the X-Desk had been holding on to mini Danger to use as a bargaining chip to get Big Danger to create the robots we saw earlier, since Danger knows the X-Men better than anyone else she can obviously make the best robot versions of them. Al plugs into mini Danger and finds the last communication from lil Dangey was with a "mother host" and wouldn't you know it, that mother host was at the X-Mansion, to be continued...

I'm really glad I read this issue before I read X-Men Red #3 because I'll be honest that issue was an instant classic for me. This issue did not reach those same heights but my God it was a fun read. They way Logan just abused poor Wade was hilarious and had Wade having second thoughts about wanting to re-join X-Force. The whole issue was just one big chase scene and those are almost always the best scene in any movie or show. Percy can stay on Logan's solo title for as long as he wants as far as I'm concerned, the dude just writes a really good Wolverine. What else can I say about Kubert on art that hasn't already been said? The man is God tier when it comes to drawing everyone's favorite mutant. I also think this was a pretty neat way to bring Danger into the fold on Krakoa, what better way to gain and AI ally than by returning their child that was stolen by the evil humans! Seriously it was a great day to be an X-Fan, and honestly I feel like this almost every Wednesday since HoX/PoX started us down this path.

This was a great issue. Really fun and the artwork was incredible.

Wolverine is pretty much the only X-book I enjoy these days. The return to the mansion will be interesting, hope Logan sets up shop there and never return back to Krakoa. Maybe bring Gambit and Jubilee along with him since they ain't doin' much these days. I don't mind Deadpool, but I guess the looney toons version is here to stay. I hope they don't kill off Blind Al tho, she's such a fun character and since Wade doesn't have his own title at the moment, she can tag along here.

Ben Percy's Wolverine has been consistently enjoyable for me and this latest issue is no exception. Adam Kubert continues to leave his peers in the dust, getting better with age, with every panel being a little gem.

My only nitpick is that Adam Kubert, whose art is amazing, seems to be drawing Logan even shorter than he used to. I get that he’s a short guy, but in some of these panels he looks like he comes up to Deadpool’s waist… which would make him about 3 feet tall. Just seems over exaggerated to me. Otherwise, though, great issue. Fun story, great art.

This was a surprisingly fun issue! I didn't expect mini-Danger, which was at the same time strange, hilarious, and adorable. Kubert's art really made the chase/fight montage, and I just love scenes like that.

To be fair, Maverick did smack it.

Also, I'm glad they gave Danger a very good reason to act the way she does. Can't wait to find out more about her child (Children? It seems foolish the CIA would give up the only leverage they have that's keeping Danger from coming after them), and if she created it herself or if there's also a father involved. I remember Danger and Warlock engaging in some intimate code sharing at the end of PAD's X-Factor run.
Here's hoping amends will be made next issue and Danger and her family are granted amnesty on Krakoa.

I think ever since he started doing his art digital he's been able to experiment more and have fun doing it. Even though I enjoy his comic book work, I feel like Adam Kubert is wasting his time with comics. His layouts and storyboarding feel like something out of big budget action movie or something. They should hire him to work on the MCU X-Men film.

That’s a great idea. I hope they use Kubert as a consultant whenever Logan makes his Disney debut.

I'm not really up to date on Deadpool continuity, but last time I checked I thought Weasel was dead and seeking revenge on Wade? When did that change? I'm glad they've patched things up, though.

Not sure they’ve exactly patched things up in reading this issue and the last.

Oh, never mind. Reading the summary I thought they were working together. Eh, what's a little back-stabbing between frenemies?

Y’know, I really don’t hate this idea. And X-Force needs an overhaul… what if they made it Wolverine, Domino, Gambit, Jubilee and Deadpool* (field branch) with Beast, Sage, Forge and Danger (intel branch) and based them out of the mansion instead of on Krakoa? I kind of like it honestly.

Jubilee can’t be on X-Force, she has to worry about Shogo for a living.

True. Maybe she could just live in the mansion be be part of the intel branch or supporting cast.

I always thought Gambit would make an excellent X-Force member and I'm surprised it never happened before.
