A great many from the Golden Age are public domain now. Every so often someone will do a series or a special with one of them.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think many of the characters at Dynamite (Green Lama, Black Terror, 40's Daredevil) were in the public domain for a while.

Calico Kid is a fascinating one because he sometimes goes by the alias "Ghost Rider".
One of the more prominent heroes of his day was Blue Bolt (aka football player Fred Parrish) from Novelty Press, created by Joe Simon:
