You can like the casting, but it doesn't change how WB has been handling Superman (on film).

Yes, and IMO the drastic pivot in terms of the films was dropping the Bates Brainiac film. Denny O'Neil and others from DC wrote many Superboy eps. Presumably if the original plans had been followed there would have been a Superman film in the mid-90s written by great DC writers who loved and understood the character. WB made a huge mistake in taking the films away from creators who knew the character and turning it over to the suits who didn't know the character. All the suits wanted was to make Superman relatable in order to score big at the box office. Hence the emotionally conflicted hero which saw its ultimate manifestation in Cavill. Total angst with no appealing qualities. Even Snyder's cut gave us mopey Cavill again. The black suit only added to the that sense. Snyder supposedly wanted to have Superman happily embrace his place on Earth but that wasn't in the movie. At the very end Cavill finally smiles. Too little too late. Rumors of where Snyder had planned to take Superman (evil) in JL2 are somewhat confirmed by JL

BTW, the Bates script wasn't the only one. Other DC writers had their ideas as well. The first ever live action multiverse story was done by the Superboy team. Roads Not Taken. A two hour ep that is a classic. More than just a good Superman and an evil Superman, it included a third Superman who was jaded, had killed Luthor and given up on humanity. That story would have been perfect to adapt to film. It was Red Son done 10 years before Red Son came out in the books.
