The way the threat has been established has been problematic, but that's the way Orchis has been depicted since HOXPOX. To have this team defeat Orchis after being gathered in this manner would mean that Marvel had simply abandoned the Orchis storyarc and had given up on ever truly resolving it.

If the setup to the mini established exactly why these specific characters are mutantkind's last hope by taking the most powerful mutants and the leaders off the board and setting up a ticking clock, then the story would work as the plucky underdogs and unlikely heroes saving the day where the more established heroes and leaders had failed.
They already have failed. They've thrown Wolverine at Orchis so much that there's enough admantium up there that it wouldn't be any less reasonable to base the Galactic Economy on that form of Unobtanium as opposed to Mysterium

And simply replacing one group of expendables with another group of expendables is not the solution. It's just repeating the same mistake.

But the bottom line is that the threat of Orchis has to become much more immediate for any scenario where it gets resolved. You don't destroy the Galactic Empire when all the Stormtroopers are having tea but when the Death Star is blowing up rebel ships and planets left and right and when if you don't win everyone dies. That is true regardless of whether it's a team of reality warpers and omegas who finally defeat Orchis or Hellion's team of misfits.
