Default What Did You Think Of Joe Madureira's Artwork On Uncanny X Men?

Joe Mad's faux-anime style must've been a big shock to comic fans when his art first graced the pages of Uncanny X Men? As someone whose seen as of the most influential artists of the 90s, was reactions to his work on X Men universally positive?

I'm reading the X Men Visionaries Joe Madureira trade from the early 2000s collecting a smattering of his issues on Uncanny. There's a lot to like here, the posing of his characters and the angles he uses add a kinetic energy to the page. I will add that his art definitely improved as his career went on. My biggest issue with his X Men art is that his faces tend to look a bit uncanny (no pun intended).

I loved it. Maybe that's why I'm new imprint shy as well. I was all in with battle chasers, steampunk and crimson and only crimson actually got a real proper ending. Man those were some good childhood days. Lol

Actually he had a lot of different artist try and copy his style. Or were at least inspired by his style. I feel like Joe Mad was almost as revolutionary as Jim Lee.

    I absolutely loved it.
Eventhough I've never been a Manga/Anime fan (I'm still not) I didn't find the switch to his work at all jarring.

Probably my favourite artist of all time.

It was amazing to see his work in Uncanny every month during the mid 90s, onslaught and leading up to trial of gambit. I was gutted he left comics to do games but he does the odd cover sometimes, shame marvel wasted his last stint on inhumans.

His Spider-Man and marrow in uncanny 446 is one of my favourite issues along with the Cannonball v gladiator in 441

Everyone raves about Jim lee but Mad was so dynamic, manga style and energetic so it felt much more unique.

I adored Joe Mad's work. This cover/issue immediately comes to mind when I see his name.

And the Betsy/Sabretooth issue still haunts me.

It has it's flaws, was clearly 90's in aesthetic and was certainly an acquired taste. But compared to other mainstream comic art in the 90's it certainly wasn't bad and still holds up quite well compared to some output we can see today in some X-men comics.

Also he gave Marrow her by now default design, visualy re-inventing her with a much more physical imposing and steamlined appearance (shame the writing still often struggled with reinforcing it), so that's a plus point to me personaly.

I absolutely loved Joe Mad's run on Uncanny. He was *my* super star artist.

His Age of Apocalypse work was out of this world. His Blink was *chef's kiss.

It was pretty good. He came back to Marvel for one of the Inhuman books and he was still good.

It was alright, Roger Cruz did it better. Madureira started shortly after greats like Lee, Liefeld, Portacio and Silvestri so it took a bit to get used it.
