Default Marvel's list of greatest Spider-Man moments

Marvel posted a list of the best Spider-Man moments as a way to celebrate his 60th anniversary.

    https://www.marvel.com/articles/comi...rom-the-comics

    • THE BEGINNING (AMAZING FANTASY #15)
    • FIRST SOLO SERIES (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1)
    • “IF THIS BE MY DESTINY…!” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31)
    • MEET THE SINISTER SIX (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1)
    • “THE NIGHT GWEN STACY DIED” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121)
    • BLACK SUIT SAGA (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252)
    • MARRIAGE TO MARY JANE WATSON (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #21)
    • RISE OF VENOM (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #300)
    • KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT (WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #31)
    • MAXIMUM CARNAGE (SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #1)
    • MEET MILES MORALES (ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4)
    • SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN (SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1)
    • ENTER THE SPIDER-VERSE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9)
    • VERSUS THE RED GOBLIN (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #797)
    • SINISTER WAR (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #70)
    • AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #75)
    • 900 ISSUE MILESTONE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #6)
    • AMAZING FANTASY #1000

As Spider-Man fans, we're likely to overthink this. On the other hand, this is a document that's going to be widely spread and it's badly done.

They don't differentiate between different versions of Amazing Spider-Man. Some of the stuff is out of order. It seems weird to have a Top 18. At the very least a Top 20 with something by Romita Sr and Stern would be a step up.

Green Goblin Unmasked, Mary Jane's first appearance, Spider-Man No More, Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut, and the debut of the Hobgoblin would all make more sense than Maximum Carnage.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

I've been a fan of Spider-Man since the ending of Spectacular Spider-Man 199. Issue 200 was fantastic. It was then followed by Maximum Carnage which led to a fantastic beat em up game on the SNES and Genesis. I love that game. With that said, Maximum Carnage has no business being on this list. I would have chosen Spider-Man 75 (end of clone saga) over Maximum Carnage. Sinister War also does not deserve to be on that list and Beyond was absolutely horrendous. Amazing 900... don't get me started.

They didn't include any of the books where Spider-Man interacted with Hellion. Like what, you're gonna make a list of his greatest moments and not include the best time in his life?

Definitely, these would be My Top (3) Three Best Moments that are missing from that list...

    • "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man!" (ASM #248)

    • MJ reveals knowing Spidey's secret all along (ASM #257)

Feels a bit weird to put Sinister War, a story which was a rushed mess and not even the best of Spencer's run (I'd put Hunted and Last Remains over Sinister War), Beyond, a story which just came out and was more about Ben Reilly, #900, a comic which has just come out and AF #1000, a comic which isn't even out yet.

Personally, I'd put Ultimate Spider-Man #1 on here, the kid who collects Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man 200.
But the amount of Symbiote stuff on here makes me think that Venom may play a major role in this run later on down the line (4 of the 10 are Symbiote related).
I wouldn't put Maximum Carnage on here either, but I can understand why it would be someone's favourite story, it's just overbloated.

Not trying to be an ass here, but this gimmick is just really weird and tedious.

It's interesting. I actually thought I'd get tired of it/ find it annoying etc. but now I find myself actively looking for the "Hellion reference" in Rift's reviews/issue summaries lol. Weird.

    ENTER THE SPIDER-VERSE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9)
VERSUS THE RED GOBLIN (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #797)
    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #75)
    900 ISSUE MILESTONE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #6)

These should be nowhere near. Spider-Verse is so overrated. Awful choices.

    Agree with these:

    THE BEGINNING (AMAZING FANTASY #15)
FIRST SOLO SERIES (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1)
“IF THIS BE MY DESTINY…!” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31)
MEET THE SINISTER SIX (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1)
“THE NIGHT GWEN STACY DIED” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121)
BLACK SUIT SAGA (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252)
MARRIAGE TO MARY JANE WATSON (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #21)
RISE OF VENOM (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #300)
    KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT (WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #31)
MEET MILES MORALES (ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4)
    SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN (SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1)

    My additions:

Mary Jane Watson first full appearance. TASM #42.
The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man. TASM #248.
Death of Harry Osborn. Spectacular Spider-Man #200.
    Confessions. USM #13.
    Coming Home. TASM #30-35.
    Spider-Men. Spider-Men #1-5.
Finale. Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310.

I'm thinking about this in the context of Marvel promoting upcoming storylines, and providing entry points for new readers.

But even then, it's not a great list. The decision to have 18 moments seems haphazard. 20 would be neater (and even 15 would be much more appropriate.)

    Looking at the moments...

    THE BEGINNING (AMAZING FANTASY #15)
    This is essential.

FIRST SOLO SERIES (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1)
    Makes sense.

“IF THIS BE MY DESTINY…!” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31)
    This is essential.

MEET THE SINISTER SIX (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1)
    Makes sense.

“THE NIGHT GWEN STACY DIED” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121)
    This is essential.

BLACK SUIT SAGA (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252)
    This is essential.

MARRIAGE TO MARY JANE WATSON (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #21)
    Makes sense.

RISE OF VENOM (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #300)
    This is essential.

    KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT (WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #31)
    This is essential.

    MAXIMUM CARNAGE (SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #1)
I understand that Maximum Carnage is a major Spider-Man landmark, and that it has its fans. But I wouldn't even include in a Top 60.

MEET MILES MORALES (ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4)
Some kind of Miles Morales story is essential.

    SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN (SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1)
It makes sense, as a relatively recent acclaimed run.

    ENTER THE SPIDER-VERSE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9)
It makes sense, as a major storyline which has influenced the films.

VERSUS THE RED GOBLIN (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #797)
It's a good finale to a major run, but it's not a Top 20 moment.

SINISTER WAR (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #70)
It's not a Top 20 moment. If you want Nick Spencer's run, the first issue is a good entry point.

    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #75)
It's the first issue of a mega-arc that is going to have an impact on Dark Web. I get it.

    900 ISSUE MILESTONE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #6)
It's a standalone issue that just came out, but while it's meant to be a grand statement on Spider-Man, it just doesn't matter all that much. If you want to promote the new run, I'd recommend the first issue.

    AMAZING FANTASY #1000
It's an upcoming landmark. I get it.

I would swap out the wedding, Maximum Carnage, Red Goblin, Sinister War, Beyond and Issue 900 for Wells/ Romita Jr's first issue, the first Bendis/ Bagley issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, the Death of Jean Dewolff, The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man, Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut, Spider-Man No More, Mary Jane's first appearance and Coming Home.

If I could make a Top 25 and add five more comics, I'd add the first appearance of Morbius, the first appearance of Punisher, Dematteis/ Buscema's Harry Osborn saga, the first appearance of Ben Reilly (also the first time someone tied up loose ends with their final issue), and the first appearance of the Hobgoblin.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Actually, it lines up perfectly with Marvel's sales plans and what they are/will be pushing in the next few months.

    Looking at the moments...

    THE BEGINNING (AMAZING FANTASY #15)
    This is essential.

FIRST SOLO SERIES (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1)
    Makes sense.
Can't promo Spider-Man if you don't promo his origin.

“IF THIS BE MY DESTINY…!” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31)
    This is essential.
Wells's run was initially promoted as featuring Doc Ock as Master Planner. I'm assuming Wells still has that planned. That's why this is included.

MEET THE SINISTER SIX (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1)
    Makes sense.
    Promo for ASM 900.

“THE NIGHT GWEN STACY DIED” (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121)
    This is essential.
Promo for ASM 10 and the Judgement Day tie-in

BLACK SUIT SAGA (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #252)
    This is essential.
Background necessary for Venom, who has his own series. And the saga itself features a Black Cat/Peter/MJ triangle, which Wells appears to be setting up in the current run.

MARRIAGE TO MARY JANE WATSON (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #21)
    Makes sense.
This is the only story that isn't tied to a current series or upcoming issue/arc. Although it could be considered background for Lost Hunt and/or love triangle in current ASM.

RISE OF VENOM (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #300)
    This is essential.
    Venom has his own ongoing.

    KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT (WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #31)
    This is essential.
    Promo for Lost Hunt.

    MAXIMUM CARNAGE (SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #1)
I understand that Maximum Carnage is a major Spider-Man landmark, and that it has its fans. But I wouldn't even include in a Top 60.
    Carnage has an ongoing.

MEET MILES MORALES (ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4)
Some kind of Miles Morales story is essential.
Promo for Miles's title, plus promo for upcoming Spider-Verse film

    SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN (SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1)
It makes sense, as a relatively recent acclaimed run.
Again, Wells's run was initially promoted as featuring Master Planner/Doc Ock.

    ENTER THE SPIDER-VERSE (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9)
It makes sense, as a major storyline which has influenced the films.
Promo for upcoming film as well as first arc of Slott's new title.

VERSUS THE RED GOBLIN (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #797)
It's a good finale to a major run, but it's not a Top 20 moment.
Promo for Norman Osborn in the current arc, plus upcoming Gold Goblin

SINISTER WAR (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #70)
It's not a Top 20 moment. If you want Nick Spencer's run, the first issue is a good entry point.
    Promo for ASM 900

    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND (THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #75)
It's the first issue of a mega-arc that is going to have an impact on Dark Web. I get it.
    Precisely.

It just went on sale. Promo.

    AMAZING FANTASY #1000
It's an upcoming landmark. I get it.

    Thumbs up

Versus Red Goblin, Sinister War, and Maximum Carnage don't belong on that list (and I'm a Carnage fan).

It is a travesty that SS #200 Harry's death and redemption story, the Death of Jean Dewolff, and The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man!" didn't make the list, yet the above gimmicky trash did!?

I couldn't agree more especially about the bottom three listed. I was like WTH!? reading some of the choices which seem, IMHO, self-indulgent of current and recent Marvel employees.

Maximum Carnage is peak Carnage-mania and had considerable cross-promotional mainstream success due to the video game and Green Jelly soundtrack, plus it introduced Shriek, who was in the most recent Venom movie.
