This was a serious let down for me, not only was there no real action or characterization but we didn't even get the myth of the Thunderbird either. It was nearly an entire issue of nothing.

Yeah, I really wanted more than was delivered. Should have been a two parter with more actual story.

It didn't really need to be a two parter to work, they easily could have introduced the investigation, done a bit of character work and given some exposition about thunder bird myths in a single issue, heck they could have done it in less than a full issue and made it work like they did back in the Penanggalan which was like 12 pages I think.

Agree. A real nothing of a story. That they would find some new animal was obvious from the start, and revealing the bird on the inside cover ended all mystery. The art was bland, maybe if the first image of the bird was a big gorgeous splash page, it would have had some impact. Instead we just got a big brown bird. And are we suppose to be more impressed by some new crypto animal than a demon or a techno/mutant polar bear? Are we suppose to be interested in Woody having one of the coolest jobs in the world, but can't get to his lab as often as he wants? A big miss.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

It just seemed a little lazy all around. Are thunderbirds even part of native folklore in Virginia? What tribe is indigenous to that area? It gave us nothing.
