Voldemort isn't mind-fragging an enormously powerful being who can mentally control an army of 100 000 beings and mentally assault another powerful telepath over a continental distance. <- This is Sauron.

Voldemort is for-sure not possessing an immortal spirit of enormous power. <- also Sauron.

He actually controls the Ork army or just tells them what to do? If he's actually controlling them that's some PC darkseid stuff.

It's not on PC Darkseid's level, but as a long-vanished poster once said, Sauron is a severely under-rated psychic.

Sauron's orc/troll armies range from somewhere well-over 60 000 to over 100 000, depending on which army we're talking about. It is demonstrated in the books that when Sauron is finally reduced to nothing more than a shadow of his power by the destruction of the Ring, his orc/troll army completely falls apart.

'The Captains bowed their heads; and when they looked up again, behold! their enemies were flying and the power of Mordor was scattering like dust in the wind. As when death smites the swollen brooding thing that inhabits their crawling hill and holds them all in sway, ants will wander witless and purposeless and then feebly die, so the creatures of Sauron, orc or troll or beast spell-enslaved, ran hither and thither mindless; and some slew themselves, or cast themselves in pits, or fled wailing back to hide in holes and dark lightless places far from home.'

...Note, again, that this is an army of beings who really, really have the upper hand in this situation. And rather than continue with the killing, when Sauron goes poof they completely fall apart.

One might also note that it then goes on to say that the humans who were working with Sauron - ie, the guys who threw in with him - don't act this way. Why? They're not under his control...
It's a thing that his will guides his orc army, asserts control over it.

He also has feats for striving mentally against Gandalf the White over a distance of hundreds of miles, basically them fighting mentally over Frodo. He continuously mentally pries at Galadriel and Lóthlorien all the way from Mordor (and she continually denies him, in part because she holds one of the Three). He seizes control of Saruman through the palantir. He effortlessly controls Pippen through the palantir (Hobbits being known to having surprising resistance to supernatural control and such, and feats for said resistance in the books).

So this is totally not the same thing as controlling six billion Daxamites over a galactic distance, but it's still impressive as all-get-out. ^_^
