As per the above response, I read Superman in the 60's and 70's and he had a collection of interplanetary animals that he "rescued" from dangerous situations and a collection of Alien artefacts. The Fortress of Solitude was large enough to cater to these interests. He also had the City of Kandor stored there.

And various weapons he'd confiscated from his enemies. Which brings up how he did research and analysis of many of the things he had. I mean, like, legit science to study things.
