Huntress (Helena Wayne) Appreciation Thread < NOTE: Not Bertinelli >

Since it appears there is a Huntress with past ties to the Justice Society of America that will be appearing in the upcoming Justice Society of America series written by Geoff Johns,

I thought we might as well have a new appreciation thread for the Helena Wayne version of the character, originally introduced back in 1977.

There was also a reintroduction of Helena Wayne / Earth-2 in the post-CoIE comics (post-52 weekly series) as seen in 2008's Justice Society of America Annual #1

and, more recently, the New52 had a different reinterpretation of the Helena Wayne Huntress.

I think she's Hypertime.

I loved her, especially her partnership with Power Girl. And her relationship with Dick as well (not the brief romantic implication though...ugh).

Yeah, I'm really hoping to see Huntress meet the current Bat-family. Bruce and Selina of course, but also the likes of Dick and Damian.

WOW. I know she's the "Dark Knight Daughter" and all, but NO love for Mom's contribution?

Not loving the new costume...but I hope we see her classic look at least one more time.

I'm curious about her Black Label outfit. I like that it completely separates her from the Bertinelli version instead of having them be such doppelgängers. I know HW wore the look first, but I think HB has worn it longer now...OG Helena can carve out a new modernized niche...

One thing that DC so often seemed to do so much better than Marvel at, back in the 80s, was their legacy characters. The introduction of Earth 2 Batman's daughter with Catwoman, Dick Grayson 'graduating' himself from Robin to Nightwing, Wally West taking on the mantle of Flash after Barry's sacrifice during Crisis. There was some great stuff going on, and it took Marvel a long time to start movement on some legacy characters like Cassie Lang or 'sidekicks allowed to grow up' like Bucky Barnes themselves.

Where Helena really was a breath of fresh air is her existence suggested that Earth 2 Batman wasn't as Frank Miller would have portrayed him, broken down and doomed to die alone, a bitter old recluse, drinking away his wine cellar in a musty old mansion. He could somehow have some semblance of a healthy happy ending and build the sort of family that was stolen from him so long ago. Comics serial nature kind of dooms most heroes to never really 'win.' Any villain who is even remotely threatening or interesting will be back again and again, more dangerous than ever. Every month there will be a new threat. Retirement is not an option. Passing the torch is not an option. And then there was Helena Wayne, upending the endless misery-porn and angst with a promise that it could end, and end well. There *was* something worth fighting for, in the end, Batman wasn't doomed to continue fighting monsters until he could see nothing else and became a monster in turn.

Could not hurt, Helena Wayne is my favorite version of the Huntress I like the pre-crisis version & the New 52 version(my favorite mini series) the only thing that disappointed me is in the New52 was that she was Robin originally.

Yeah, I don't see it lasting -- because I don't think it will be liked by most fans. I'd be fine with an update, but it's really not a great design.

Too bad they just didn't go with JSA on Earth 2. JSA loses some status when it has to operate in the shadow of the JLA.
