I voted for Ferris Bueller's day off. But it was a hard choice because I really love The Breakfast Club and Planes Trains and Automobiles.

Those were my top three as well and I went back and forth a bit before settling on "The Breakfast Club."

The Breakfast Club for me followed (closely) by Ferris Bueller's Day Off and then National Lampoon's Vacation.

I have to agree with this list too. Guy has an impressive body of work but, at the end of the day, these 3 are heads and shoulders above the rest.

It's always interesting to see poll results.

I wasn't even thinking Ferris Bueller when I created this thread. I was expecting a dead-heat between The Breakfast Club, Home Alone, and Christmas Vacation.

    I love being surprised. LOL

He's got a very nice collection of films ... It can be hard to choose.

I voted, per OP's parameters, for National Lampoon's Vacation, but it should be noted that that is also Harold Ramis's film, and not just John Hughes. Ramis directed.
Things I love: Batman, Superman, AEW, old films, Lovecraft

Grant Morrison: “Adults...struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life. Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real.”
