I'd put Cyclops as the nerd. Since Nightcrawler was only a nerd in one cartoon. The jock is tough... Maybe Angel or Havok?

Yeah, if you consider the Jock's whole thing was too much pressure to perform/excel from his dad, and had that relationship with the principal where he was assumed to be and was the most reliable and obedient ... not far from Scott's role in the X-verse.

The romantic relationships would be off with the poster, though. You could just make teenage Jean the "basketcase" because she's still learning to adapt to being able to know what everyone is thinking all the time, and let Rogue be the princess. I think there was a kiss towards the end of the original ... romantic if Remy is willing to pass out for a kiss/not afraid to let her know everything about him? You know, change the "never had sex" from the original to "never been kissed"?

I kinda wouldn't want to make Professor X the principal, but it works if you make Logan the janitor!
