    Default Favorite Military Movie/Series

In honor of Veterans Day here in the States, what do you consider your favorite Military movie.
To me the first 15 minutes of the Normandy Scene of Saving Private Ryan really captured how violent war can be.
I saw that when it first came out and grown men broke down bawling in the theater watching that scene. People left and it legit caused PTSD in vets. So powerful and graphic and sad.

Movies tend to make war seem glamorous but Saving Private Ryan changed a lot of that.

Then there was Band of Brothers. The best HBO Mini Series of all time and probably the best military series of all time. The Pacific was good too but not close to Band of Brothers.

MASH. One of the best sitcoms of all times. While set in a theater of war it tried to convey the realism of war but knew what it was.

Being in the Army for 5 years I am so thankful I didn’t experience war. I’ve seen fellow soldiers leave and then come back a different person. It’s not easy and speaking to my friends it’s something that movies and such can’t ever capture the atmosphere.

What do you consider some or the best?

Thank you to all the Vets on the boards.

Kelly's Heroes. It is kinda offbeat for a war film being about soldiers trying to rob a bank behind enemy lines, but it is one of my favorites. Plus the cast is just amazing with Clint Eastwood, Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalis, Carol O'Conner, and so many others.

Anyone remember Tour of Duty from the 80´s? My favorite show about war. The intro with the soundtrack from The Rolling Stones still gives me vibes.

I love Patton: Lust For Glory. Great portrayal of a deeply flawed but fascinating man who couldn’t exist without a war to fight.

TV Series: MASH and Band of Brothers.

Edit: Don't know how I brain farted and forgot Apocalypse Now, Platoon, and Full Metal Jacket.

I have been watching a couple of old War shows with my dad.

Combat and Rat Patrol. I am really enjoying them.

Also my favorite war show of all time is the made for tv mini series movie The Blue and the Grey. It had a great cast!

The list is long, but if I had to pick one, it would be The Pacific. It took us from the naïveté of volunteers through the costs of imposed on surviving veterans, with an unsentimental look at every horror along the way. It celebrated the glories, but did not flinch in the face of the tragedies that went with them, or how they changed those who fought.

This is going to be a weird choice but I'll go with Tropic Thunder since it was created as a parody of war/military movies especially with how actors and creators prepare for them.

The big ones I can think of have been mentioned, so to add to the list: (and because not all military movies/shows are about war)
    -- Guns of Navarrone
    -- Paths of Glory
    -- China Beach
    -- Top Gun(s)
    -- Officer and a Gentleman
    -- Private Benjamin

Not yet mentioned, The Longest Day, a favorite of mine.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

What wars did Akira and Full Metal Panic take place in?
