And then there's the actual gross stuff like Otto carrying out romances in Peter's body.
Superior was just a bunch of gross violations of Peter's body. Otto used it to romance people, kill people, ruin Peters' relationships, and he "killed" Peter twice.

Yet then we're supposed to accept Peter just shrugging it off and not treating it like a big deal because Otto "wasn't that bad a guy."

Like, I get why Superior was popular. Slott loves writing Otto and the premise of a Supervillain trying to be a hero is fun. But there was a lot wrong with it.

That was the whole point, though.

Feel free to dislike what was done as a Spider-man fan, but the entire point of Superior was to show that Peter was, in fact, the Superior Spider-man and Otto was a monster regardless of how much he tried to be otherwise. If you didn't like what Otto was doing and saw him as the bad guy then you were reading it correctly.

Now that WAS really bad writing.

I immediately lost interest in Slott's Spidey going forward with this. Not saying I wanted multiple issues of misery porn but for ffs a villain murdered him and took over his life. Surely that would have SOME effect on you and cause serious refection? But nope, as you say, he just shrugged it off.

It didn't help that the next things he did were to turn Black Cat heel, portray Peter as a goofy childish imbecile who showed no interest in his own company*, and reveal that the spider that bit Peter also bit another heretofore unmentioned character who was literally limbo'ed in a vault because there was no smart way of doing such a stupid reveal.

I consider Silk's origin/first arcs to be actively damaging to the franchise. I've come to like her but I have to mentally block that introduction.

Luckily, I did enjoy Spider-Verse but otherwise that volume of ASM is really bad.

*I consider this Peter's version of Goku as a father. Like, you know he's the good guy but he does not give a fuck about his children, which Goku does have an in-universe reason for, but it's still really awkward if you think about it for like a second.
"Has Sariel summoned you here, Azrael? Have you come to witness the miracle of your brethren arriving on Earth?"

"I WILL MIX THE ASHES OF YOUR BONES WITH SALT AND USE THEM TO ENSURE THE EARTH THE TEMPLARS TILLED NEVER BEARS FRUIT AGAIN!"

"*sigh* I hoped it was for the miracle."

Dan Watters' Azrael was incredible, a constant delight and perhaps too good for this world (but not the Forth). For the love of St. Dumas, DC, give us more!!!
