All he can say is “that’s not true” which makes it a case of who you believe. Although I suppose these Variety reports are his efforts to get ahead of that claim.

So comicbook/film Twitter turned out to be reactionary assholes, what a surprise.

    Link fixed.

The studio and Gunn doing damage control - Variety or THR are the usual venues for doing so. This is why Gunn's history of dissembling could potentially hurt SL. The story is all over social media hence the quick "response". Gunn may be telling the truth but many don't take him at his word and he has brought that on himself.

However, production insiders are questioning the timeline of events.

According to a source close to the production, the character was in the script, and Gunn talked to Youssef about possibly playing the role, but a formal offer was never made and talks never went further, because the character was dropped from the script before the strikes started. The changes to the story were made prior to Hamas’ attack in Israel.

The question is, whether Bassem will respond or not. He might confirm the timeline of these decisions and the case is closed. And if he doesn't, well, this shitshow will get worse.

    From Deadline:

Egyptian-born comedian Bassem Youssef claims he lost a role in James Gunn‘s Superman Legacy movie due to his public support of Palestine, however, a source close to production tells Deadline, that’s not the case: Youssef was never formerly offered the role.

We hear that Youssef taped an audition pre-actors strike for the role of Rumaan Harjadi. However, by the time Gunn turned in his final shooting strike post writers’ strike ending in late September, that role was cut. This was all before the tragic events of Oct. 7, 2023. Hence per the Superman Legacy production source — no official ask was made to Youssef. Given that the actors strike was still ongoing in late September, and didn’t end until early November, no communication about Youssef obtaining or not obtaining the role would have been communicated to him.

Another source close to the situation believes that perhaps this is a case of “He said-he said;” we’re told Youssef feels strongly that his public political opinions got him nixed from production.

Smart as hell of Corenswet. Yeah I’m not expecting Youssef to walk his words back, there’s plenty of people on social media who will support him regardless of whether what he said is fake or not.

To be fair, Basseem himself said, that it could have been misunderstanding.

In later years, Bialya developed into a militaristic state led by the ruthless, yet buffoonish Col. Rumaan Harjavti. Under Harjavti's reign, Bialya was a police state, overrun by poverty and political strife. Under Harjavti's reign, members of the United Nations super-team known as the Global Guardians became members of the Bialyan military, causing friction with their replacements in the Justice League International. Harjavti conspired with a former member of his harem, a woman known only as the Queen Bee to solidify his power base, and turn Bialya into a major world power. To this end, the Queen Bee and an alien scientist from the Dominion developed technologically advanced brainwashing techniques that enabled them to maintain control over select members of the super-human community such as the former members of the Global Guardians. Harjavti also captured a member of the Champions of Angor known as Wandjina. With the Queen Bee's help, Wandjina was transformed into the Thunderer, a loyal killer in service to Bialya. It was the Queen Bee who actually pulled Wandjina's strings however, and at a public demonstration, she had the Thunderer brutally assassinate Colonel Harjavti before the entire assemblage.

The people using Baseem to **** on Gunn won’t accept it unless he puts out a PR statement so hopefully that happens soon.

I’ve seen a lot of Youssef on the news a bit since the Israel/Gaza war kicked off. Didn’t know he was an actor though.

This can turn out to be another superman vanilla if anything and everything controversial superman has to say is removed from it...Then again i should have expected this. After all kittens in trees is what the character is reduced to..Maybe gunn is launching authority with this thing. That's a good thing.Superman can stay in the past as legacy old man.
