On the one hand, Beast's descent into full-scale villainy seems like a metatextual take-that to the awful "Cyclops is too a bad guy now!" nonsense from the post AvX period. I recall that Hank walked out on Utopia because his old friend Scott prioritised saving mutantkind over immediately rescuing him from Osborn's torture cell, then screwed with the timeline in order to shame Revolutionary Cyclops (which ended up spectacularly rebounding on him, natch), and ever since then it's seemed that Beast has adopted the mindset of "Well, if everyone forgave Scott for all those things I was mad about, maybe I'll be the kind of mutant all the other mutants secretly rely on to save them, only so much smarter and cold-blooded".
On the other hand, O5 Hank got into dark magic before being sent back to his own timeline. I'm betting this version of Beast is somehow a result of that.
