The cool thing about the idea of another pseudo-historical film following Gladiator?

The idea of Ridley Scott making his own version of the Year of Five Emperors, or anyone of the half-dozen or so major Imperial Civil wars before the Western Empire fell.

The bad thing about the idea?

Making a film that pretty much has to start by revealing that the more optimistic ending to Gladiator was laughably inaccurate, both for the history that inspired the first film and for the world inside the first film.

That's one of the the few edges that The Fall of the Roman Empire had as a film covering the same type of ideas as Gladiator; the more pessimistic and tragic ending of that film could easily be followed by a civil war movie without much issue.
Like action, adventure, rogues, and outlaws? Like anti-heroes, femme fatales, mysteries and thrillers?

I wrote a book with them. Outlaw’s Shadow: A Sherwood Noir. Robin Hood’s evil counterpart, Guy of Gisbourne, is the main character. Feel free to give it a look: https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asi...E2PKBNJFH76GQP

I was never into them, but they are very popular.

They could make a history film about gladiatrix (female gladiators).

Female gladiators did exist. They were mentioned in history books although, they were far less common than the male gladiators. Female gladiators are rare.

Did anyone ever read the insane idea Nick Cave had for Gladiator II? https://collider.com/gladiator-2-rej...k-cave-script/ That stuff was bonkers.

Hopefully not, Gadot is not really a great actress, and also too old for the role if they plan to cover most of her life, rather than just the final years with Anthony

Wasn't there a prequel pitched starring Crowe that covered the war leading up to the final battle in the opening scene?

There is a German movie Held der Gladiatoren about a brother and sister who are both forced to become gladiators. He is the main character, but her storyarc is also interesting. It was a long time ago that I saw it, but if I remember correctly, it was pretty good and fight scenes were solid.

Think there were a few in the film itself, representing the Roman army against Maximus's "Carthagian Barbarian horde".

I'd rather not see this happen, even if I think Scott still has it (I really liked The Last Duel and House of Gucci, the former more than the latter). There's too much baggage to it and Scott is 85 years old. He should bid his time better.

Looks like we have a lead:

Mescal looks quite a bit like both Joaquin Phoenix and Crowe, so it would make sense for him to be Commodus's Nephew and Maximus's (probably) other son, Lushus, or alternatively, a younger version of either in a prequel.

Barry Keoghan has been cast as Emperor Geta.

The real-life Emperor had a case of sibling rivalry in real life, so kind of curious if they'll transfer this to the movie in some way, although Lushus's only brother is probably his half-brother via Maximus who was killed by Commodus's men. Geta is from another dynasty I think.

Maybe make Geta Commodus's secret heir some other way?

It's an impressive cast, and the original director wants to do it, although it is surprising to have a sequel a generation later.

This is still such a dumb idea. Not ever great film needs a sequel, and in fact a shitting sequel usually lower peoples opinions of the first good film a lot of the time.
