Default The many Lassos of the Wonderverse

    • Lasso of Truth: The Lasso of Truth is Wonder Woman's primarily weapon and it is a magical golden rope that forces anyone it captures to obey and tell the truth.
    • Lasso of Persuasion: The Lasso of Persuasion is a similar mystical item to Wonder Woman's and Wonder Girl's Lasso's of Truth and Lightning. The Blue Lasso possess the ability to make it's victim obey Donna Troy's commands but her willpower must be greater than the victim's.
    • Lasso of Lightning: Ares gave this lasso to Wonder Girl as a gift. It generates lightning depending on how angry the wielder is.
    • Lasso of Submission: Unbreakable magic lasso used by Earth 3 Superwomen. It have the ability to compel obedience and even love of the wielder in those it ensnares.

Lassos seem to be a pretty big topic over in the Donna Troy thread so thought....might as well have a main place for it.

What are your general thoughts on the many Lassos in the WWverse? Should there be only the 1? Do you like them being a staple for some of the Wonders? Should the multiple lassos be ingrained into the lore before finding their owners?

well, as a counter-point, how many writers/artists actually use it as a lasso and not just a magic rope?

Lasso of Truth is all you need. The others serve no real purpose other than to make Diana less unique, much like making her a retroactive legacy character does. Just about all with a lasso knockoffs would be better with a weapon unique to them, like Artemis with her axe or bow-and-arrow.

I don't really count the Power Woman one since that's for an evil version of Wonder Woman from an alt universe.

Remember the JLA story by Joe Kelly where Diana's lasso is broken and then reality starts becoming a surrealistic nightmare because the lasso was a cosmic embodiment of many things including reality itself?

I like that story. I like how important and powerful the lasso is in that story. I also like how Diana the lasso is such a unique choice of equipment for Diana, that represents the unique way she looks at things including combat.

Other lassos running around diminish those qualities a lot. I think each member of the Wonder family should have their own unique tool with creative powers

I don't think having other lassos necessarily diminishes those qualities. It's like Lord of the Rings, one ring to rule them all, except here we have One lasso to rule them all. It's the OG, others have been attempted to be made but they are nowhere near as powerful as 'The Golden Perfect'

Then it makes the other lassos poor replicas of the original one, instead of highliting the unique qualities of the characters.

I assume the point of having several lassos is to visually connect these characters to Diana, but there are so many other ways to do that

They already are poor replicas of the original. They just have some qualities that stand out but arent nearly as popular. It's just like Batman having a million sidekicks, they're all offshoots of him more or less but take different portions of who he is.

I guess I'm not that cynical about them. I definitely think they need some work, but they can be way more than that

Agreed, though I kinda like the others having weapons a bit more unusual than an axe (though I can dig it for Artemis since it's sort of her signature now). Yara's bolas and Nubia's staff that turns into a rope are both really cool. For Donna and Cassie, maybe give them something like a flail weapon or a whip.

That said, I definitely don't think any of the weapons should have truth powers other than Diana's. An attack like the lightning is cool and I'm even okay with things like the power of persuasion or reading thoughts (which would functionally let them get the truth out of people), but only Diana's should be the straight-up cosmic embodiment of truth and let her really dig into people's psyches and the like.

Yeah, I feel like the vambraces are a perfectly good link. Plus you've got Yara with her own tiara and Cassie who typically has the WW symbol on her costume.

I also love the war paint in Historia - Antiope's paint with the WW eagle, Hippolyta's goddess mark, etc. Would be awesome to have them all do something like Antiope's when they're facing off against a really big threat. It's definitely a lot cooler than the variations on the screaming chicken armor they had in Gail Simone's run.

Thanks for starting this thread and with great pics and descriptions, Primal Slayer.

I am going to say "Yes", there should be more than 1 magic lasso, possibly a 5th red one from Ares to Nubia.

But I don't want to see Non-Wonder Woman characters with lassos, magic or otherwise.

One lasso only, please. Although the fact that Donna had one never bothered me when I was a kid, it does now.

I only support the made of clay origin.

    Diana's lasso can also:

    Restore lost memories
    Get rid of illusions
    Eliminate mind control
Transport Diana's mind into the mind of whoever is tied within it
Force the person to understand the absolute truth

I like it when Donna, Cassie, and Superwoman all have their own lassos. Just give them all unique properties.

Weird... 'cause Cassie DID actually have a run where her lasso was seemingly a creation of her own magic powers as a demi-goddess.

also, pretty sure Donna has used guns more often than Cassie has.
