There's a difference between having some off and on training and being a proficient fighter. Based on what Merrill said, he has been training all the years since he last saw Johnny. That plus his size would make it very believable that he could beat Johnny up.

I am just hoping Johnny sees this as a wake up call and realized he needs to be more than his powers and takes hand to hand training seriously. Looking at a bunch of other team characters in the Avengers and X-Men they are very clearly not just about their powers but have taken the time to learn to fight without their powers.

I don't think Johnny lost because he wasn't good at h2h though i guess it could have been shown better that he had more skills but rather the issue states Merril had been training his body for years just for this moment.

In "The Coming of Galactus" #48, he was doing a pretty good job fighting off a mob, until Ben came to the rescue, so it's not like he's never had to fight before. Maybe he would have still lost, but he did even seem to be trying.

Then maybe that is just it...he didn't even try to throw hands with Merrill. At least that would have made a little more sense than just standing there and getting smacked around.
