Talking 150 Movies in 2023 Challenge!

    We Continue on Per the Tradition of Our Yearly Challenge from Past Years to Help Motivate Us to Experience More Cinema in our Lives;

The Official Beginning of the 2023 Movie Challenge Thread!

The Previous Year was 150 Movies and I feel that is right now still an Appropriate Challenge Still, So we will keep it the same as before!

    It's is the right amount!

So Now as Past Challenges, The Challenge Simply is to Watch 150 Movies in Year of 2023 in the Time-Frame from the Very Start of the Year to the Very End of the Year, Midnight to Midnight!

    Da Rules are Noted Below!

    Rules;

1.) It can be Any Movie so long as it fits what mostly IS considered a movie, Length of a Movie usually is at least around an hour or more.

2.) Their are Unique exceptions like Anime Movies, some of them can be shorter the an hour, but if they hit around 30 mins or more that is questionable, but I will let you be the judge of that.

3.) Also shows that feature movies Like Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes I will count since those mostly feature full length movies.

4.)Documentaries will be included as well as long as they are in the movie format. If any problems or concerns let me know.

    NEW RULE!!

5.) I have been in other Challenges like the Halloween Movie Changle on the TV/Film Thread & it has been allowed when uniqeu TV Mini-Series like Salem's Lot (1979) & IT (1990) have been put in a watching format in a way that makes it a full lenght movie and is for the most part considered so. So such Mini-Series in these movie formats if you already have not been certain to include them are fine. If you did it in the past that was fine as well.

If any problems or concerns let me know.

6.) Try to watch the movie on a Legal~Formats, try to avoid not legal like pirating or any other format like that.

7.)The ONLY OPINON in watching a movie Final Choice!

Piracy is not allowed, but many Older and Rarer movies I have found VERY Hard to come by them either by VHS, DVD or Streaming services. These more obscure movies have YET been found fully posted on places like You-Tube and others Video services by users. Now I still encourage the other Traditional formats as the main opinions to support the movie industry, but if their are some of these Very Hard to find movies you want to watch but can only see them in those upload formats, That will be considered that ok, but only as a last resort. If the studios that made them seem not care they are their and don't care to make DVD's or VHS's of them, then I would not worry to much over it.

8.) You can give us to the format you watch the movie on if you like as well on you listings. It is Encouraged also to Post your lists of what you have watch so far ever now and again if you feel like. Also Feel Free to share your Reviews and Thoughts of your movies, those are a Joy for Many to read!

9.) It is NOT~150-DIFFERENT Movies either ~~~ If you decide to Watch the same movie several times then that counts as well, number of times you seen a movie counts to the overall total. So if you seen the same movie 3x's during the challenge time period, then that is 3 to your total. We all gain new experiences when seeing a Movie more then once, it is very enriching.

10.) You can go OVER 150 if you like, its 150 At Minimum or more to complete the challenge.

11.) You have to see the majority length of the movie you are watching. Mostly around 90% of it, counting off around 10% for times like when we are in theaters and have to take bathroom breaks or step out for a moment, things like that.

12.) We ALL have Busy Lives and Responsibilities, so if You are Watching a Movie and have to stop and come back to later and pick up where you left off that Counts and Always counts, it is about seeing the Majority Whole of the Movie, so don't worry about if you have to start and pick-up later, that is just Life.

13.) If Anyone has any concerns or questions about Da Rules or things that should be added that will be ok, just make a post and I will go over it, I will edit as we go along that sound like good suggestion.

14.) The Contest Begins at the stroke of Midnight of the start of 2023 and will end when 2023 officially ends at the stroke of Midnight to start 2023!

15.) If you are Watching a Movie on December 31st, 2023 and watch at least a good majority by the time 2024 hits and just have alittle left, that can still count, just it can't be starting it right when 2024 is about to hit.

16.) Overall Have Fun & Enjoy!

NOW LETS CELEBRATE OUR LOVE & "TRIBUTE TO CINEMA"!

Namor the Sub-Mariner, Marvel's oldest character, will have been published for 85 years in 2024. So where's my GOOD Namor anniversary ongoing, Marvel?

Thank You both and Everyone else that continues this tradition for coming back for it again & Happy New Year 2023 to you all!

Indeed 150 I feel is a Good Challenge, Hard but more likely to push us to Finally watch those movies we pushed off for so long, I know it has for me Watching films that are older then me finally added them to my Lexicon of Knowledge and experiances helping me grow in wisdom, art, story, character, worlds & much more, it is a push to push ourselves to finally do what we have desired for so long but seemly espically in my case always put on the backburn trying to do it alone with now puspose or reasoning cause we are all sharing and doing it all together.

In the end wheather we achieve the 150 or not it gets to push us to strive for a goal we never would have alone and we do it together, sharing our films, our views and giving us ideas on films we could watch ourselves but never though of or even knew existed.

That and much more is why I love doing this challenge every year and I Thank You all her now like Iron Maiden & Reviresco and those that will come after for continuing this challenge and enjoy this idea, means allot to me and I means allot to see it means much to you all.

To a Happy, Honoring and Fun 2023!

I'm back, despite having failed to meet the challenge for the first time ever last year. Part of it was due to starting a new job, but I think part of it was that I got out of the habit of going to the cinema during COVID. To rectify this, I will make a concerted effort to get out of the house and see a movie in the cinema at least once a fortnight, and once a week where possible.

As usual, I'll be keeping a master list of movies watched in this first post, and making new posts to mark significant milestones.

I'm going to participate, although I need to finish my write-ups on the 2022 films (I know this is not an expectation; it's something I was doing anyway.)

Goals I've got for the year are to see all the films I haven't seen in the Sight & Sound Top 100, and that are mentioned in some books of the best films ever.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Do you have the Criterion collection online or does that violate the rules? They are featuring 50 of the top 100.

I think streaming services like Criterion or Netflix or whatever would be acceptable.

CJStriker can correct me, but the prohibition seems to be exclusively on illegal piracy.

So if something was put online free by its owners, it's fine. If something is public domain, and put online, that's also fine. If you watch a bunch of films from some boutique service during the trial period, it counts. If you go to an illegal streaming site or download an MP4 file of a copyrighted movie from an unofficial source, that's not kosher, although there may be weird exceptions if something can't be found elsewhere (IE- a black & white silent version of Tim Burton's Batman someone put online.)

In past years, I've posted about films I've seen on HBO Max, Netflix, Mubi, Arrow Video and even Youtube or the Internet Archive.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Indeed Thanks for the Questions 4theEarth & Mister Mets, indeed Pricay is more of gaining in What is considered illgal by law standers mostly watching movies copied form videos, dvd, shot form cameras in theaters, copied from streaming services, that short of deal. But honestly I don't find that much around anymore.

Most Online Serives like Criterion I consider ok, their were a few VERY & I mean Very rare movies that only places like PLEX, TUBI, VIMEO & You Tubers who put in on thier tube sites where some of the only place I could find these movies. Honestly most of these out of the MAJOR streaming services I will consider ok espically since they seem to have been on their for so that even the studios don't care their their really, most likely cause the are such rare movies.

In the end I leave it up to you alls best judgements too what you think is a right place to view a movie and not, but mostly you all do a Very Good Job in that, but I am still glad you asked me to clarify I hope this help.

Thanks for the detailing as I was unclear about how accessible the movies had to be to other posters. I do love my rare films as much as the regular product of the industry.

That said I am not including Park Lanes which I started in 2022 on Criterion but have not finished. It is 8 hours long.

    1. The Village Detective: A Song Cycle
    2. The Oblong Box
    3. The Third Murder
    4. Shin Godzilla
    5. Intervista
    6. The Pale Blue Eye

    1. Black Adam (2022) on HBO Max - dull performance in the title role by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
    2. Exorcist 3 (1990) on Peacock - This film IMO is more frightening than the first movie and underrated. Starring George C. Scott
    3. The Lodger (1944) on TCM - This is another underrated film and one of the better ones dealing with Jack the Ripper (played by Laird Cregar)
    4. The Comedy of Terrors - Vincent Price and Peter Lorre play two undertakers who use the same coffin over and over. Also featuring Boris Karloff with Basil Rathbone as a reluctant "client" who just won't stay dead.
    5. The Nun (2018) - Part of the Conjuring "universe" of films, IMO this is the creepiest one.
    6. The Blues Brothers. (1980). Love the pairing of Dan Ackroyd and the late John Belushi. Most of the filming was done in Chicago and it's amazing how they got the permission to film on some of the locales. Many cameos by famous blues artists like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and a cameo by a young Steven Spielberg.
    7. The Invisible Man (1933) another good horror film by James Whale (Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein) The special effects were quite good for the times.
    8. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
    9. Flight of the Phoenix (1965) My favorite Jimmy Stewart film and a unique kind of disaster film in an era when the Poseidon Adventure was a big blockbuster. Stewart plays former WW2 pilot in his late middle age who ends up working for a third rate company in a aging craft that crashes. They are miles off course and have little chance of being rescued.
    10. The Changeling (1980) I recall seeing this movie years ago and it hasn't really played on TV that much. George C. Scott once again stars in this film about a man who rents a house and finds out it is haunted.
    11. The Uninvited (1944) Another ghost story movie and one of my favorites.
    12. Event Horizon (1997) This was considered a box office failure but has become a bit of a cult film over the years.
    13. Tale of Two Cities (1939) From a year that many consider is the best year for films. Great cast and the actress who plays the vengeful Madame DeFarge is quite memorable.
    14. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) Another great adaptation of a classic novel with a standout performance by Charles Laughton.
    15. Gladiator (2000) I had forgotten how many Academy Awards this movie won (5)... Best Picture, Best Actor (Russell Crowe) plus Costume design, sound, visual effects with nominations for Joaquin Phoenix (supporting actor) and Ridely Scott (director)
    16. The Usual Suspects (1995) - clever film and plot told in flashback.
    17. Hangover Square (1945) composer/pianist suffers from blackouts and becomes a serial killer. Played by actor Laird Cregar, who also played Jack the Ripper in the Lodger, he died shortly after the film was completed.
    18. The Walking Dead (1935) Boris Karloff, in minimal makeup effects, plays a wrongly accused man who is executed and then brought back from the dead seeking revenge on the men who framed him for murder.
    19. War of the Worlds (2005) Remake of 1953 film based on Orson Welles famous radio broadcast of H.G. Wells that terrified listeners
    20. Benny and Joon (1993)
    21. The Trial of Sargeant Rutledge (1960)- scheduled for Black History month, Woody Strode plays a respected cavalry officer who is defended by Jeffrey Hunter when he is charged with the murder of a white woman and her father
    22. Duel (1971) - Steven Spielberg's first full length feature that was a TV movie of the week
    23. The Crazies - exec produced by George A. Romero, a small town's residents exposed to a toxic leak go on a zombie like rampage.
    24. Batman (1989)
    25. Batman Returns (1992) Tim Burton was supposed to do a third Batman film with Keaton but unfortunately it never came to be.
    26. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
    27. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1961) - classic John Ford
    28. Curse of the Werewolf(1961) AFAIK, Hammer's only werewolf movie. Oliver Reed has the leading role in this.
    29. Ghost Ship (2001)
    30. Witness for the Prosecution (1957)One of seven films Charles Laughton and wife Elsa Lancaster (Bride of Frankenstein) appeared together. The other that I can think of is the The Private Life of Henry The Eighth.
    31. The Island of Lost Souls (1932)Charles Laughton again starring as Dr. Moreau, a deranged doctor who performs horrific genetic experiments.
    32. Beetlejuice (1988)
    33. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)
    34. The Quick and the Dead (1995) A quirky western with a heavy cast that includes multiple Oscar winner Gene Hackman (who has since retired from acting) as the bad guy, a young Leonardo DiCaprio (another future Best Actor Oscar winner), Russell Crowe (who would win his best actor Oscar for Gladiator in 2000) and Sharon Stone as the lady gunfighter.
    35. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) This movie never gets old to me. I love the movies that feature the original cast and Ricardo Montalban made for a great adversary
    36. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) The last time the original Star Trek cast would be in a film.
    37. The Miracle Worker (1962) Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke both won Oscars for this biographical film based on the story of Helen Keller and her tutor Anne Sullivan.
    38. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior I remember going to see this when it opened and in the U.S. it was titled The Road Warrior. Since the first film hadn't been released in the U.S, the dropped the Mad Max 2 title here. It introduced U.S. audiences to Mel Gibson and he would go on to do many more films after that.
    39. Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte (1964) One of the best of Bette Davis films in the horror genre.
    40. Hound of the Baskervilles (Hammer version) (1958) In this movie neither Christopher Lee (Sir Henry Baskerville or Peter Cushing (Holmes) is the villain.
    41. The Old Dark House (1932) This was once considered a lost film until director Curtis Harrington found a printable negative. Directed by James Whale, this is the first film where Boris Karloff's name appears in the opening credits. He plays a mute butler and has no lines in the movie. It also starred Gloria Stuart who would appear in the blockbuster Titantic movie (1997)
    42. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) Hammer Films first Frankenstein film has very little to do with the original tale. This was also Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee's first film together.
    43. Rio Bravo (1959) Restored version on TCM, co-hosted by Martin Scorsese
    44. Superman (1978) Presented on TCM for part of their salute to Warner Brothers.
    45. The Mask of Dimitrious (1944) This is one of a series of nine unrelated Warner Brothers films that paired Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet.
    46. Cocaine Bear (2023) Loosely based on a true story this was somewhat entertaining if a bit gory. This is Ray Liotta's last film and undoubtedly he will be better known for "Goodfellas"
    47. The Giant Gila Monster (1953) Teenagers, hot rods, a giant lizard and nitro glycerine make for an explosive mix. Produced by Ken Curtis in his pre - Gunsmoke days.
    48. Mark of the Vampire (1935) Horror film directed by Todd Browning and which also features Bela Lugosi as a vampire....or is he? Featured on TCM as part of a retrospective of the work of famed cinematographer James
      Wong Howe.
    49. Congo (1995) A strange mix of sci-fi and jungle adventure movie with a diverse cast featuring Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) as a an entertaining "Great White Hunter" and Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Show) as the devious though incompetent villain of the story. It's no classic but it has a weird, entertaining charm to it.
    50. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
