The relationship Alan Moore once dismissed in “For the Man Who Has Everything” as “too obvious,” one has to at least entertain the thought experiment: what would happen if the world’s greatest superhero and the world’s greatest superheroine got together? The first time they tried it, it was a ploy—part of an attempt to dissuade a villain called the Revenger from targeting Lois. After that, Wonder Woman is forced into a relationship with Superman by the god Eros after she rejects him in 1981’s DC Comics Presents #32. 1983’s Wonder Woman #300 features a fantasy sequence where Diana imagines what her life might be like if she married Superman.

The first serious attempt at a romantic pursuit between the two was in 1988’s Action Comics #600, when Wonder Woman’s publicist sets the two up on a date. Superman gets fresh a little too fast, and together they manage to fend off Darkseid from an invasion on Mt. Olympus, but they ultimately decide they’ll probably work better as friends.

Kingdom Come in 1996 is the first to suggest a long term relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman, with the two finding new love for each other years after Lois Lane’s murder by the Joker. This would continue to be a trend in Elseworlds stories, including The Dark Knight Strikes Again and Superman: Red Son.

But it’s in the New 52 era, where a continuity reset erased Superman’s marriage to Lois Lane, that Superman and Wonder Woman seriously give it a go. The two share a kiss in Justice League #12, both identifying as lonely gods who have trouble finding people who can relate to them and resolving to find that solace in each other. Technically, it’s a relationship which lasts the rest of Superman’s life, until he dies in the very last New 52 Superman issue. Not long after, Wonder Woman’s Superman is replaced in the DC Universe by his Pre-Flashpoint counterpart, restoring his marriage to Lois and allowing Diana to pursue Steve Trevor.

I notice Pop artists tend to do SMWW more too than their regular pairs. Dillon Boy for example loves SMWW.

I love them all but can I say I really love the Princess Diana and Clark Kent ones?

Still even at its lowest SMWW maintained better than some of rebirth’s books.

That is a fact and it sold more than most couples' series even when DC tried to sell it as a relationship that was ending, first with Tomasi making Clark act like a jerk telling Diana he did not love her, then the dying thing. So these writeups tend to be very biased and one sided. We go crunch the numbers ourselves and see that SMWW was quite a decent selling series and the merch they spawned sold too. They still licensed stuff with them too.

WB has a new model and it is what it should have been all this time...making money, not losing money; so I hope they wake up and stop ignoring what could be a good chance to get new fans on board and generate more income. It never fails to amuse me all the people who hate on SMWW and the new 52 prob don't see the irony that it is that initiative why comics got the new lease of life it needed to continue. The industry was in a bad slump before. Rebirth helped some but it did not bring in new fans and has not sustained anything. DC simply traded off one for the next and lost again. They need to really use their multiverse. They say they will but do not when it comes to SMWW. Given we have a fan base for it...and everything else is hit or miss...from movies to tv to comics...there is no good reason to not give us something concrete. Haters will hate but this is a business.

It's weird he didn't mention Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #93 by the issue. Anyways, this article, indirectly, brings up a good point. That is the concept of Superman and Wonder Woman never went anywhere. Despite DC's embargo on it, I assume it was movie synergy. Once the Snyder films flopped, it seems DC has eased up on it. And if Jon and Yara was any indicator for 5G and how Future State "teased" it, Didio was once again pushing for Superman and Wonder Woman in characters not Diana and Clark. Which begs the question, can you kill the idea of Superman and Wonder Woman?

5G was going to have Jon paired with Jenny Sparks. The Yara/Jon team seems only a Future State concept. idk
