In the current age, writers are getting to pick what fits their book’s continuity (i.e. Power Girl). If Taylor decided to go with the New 52 canon instead of NTT, it was probably his choice. So even if he’s not the first to introduce the cliche dead parents origin to Kory’s backstory, he’s the one intentionally reinforcing it.
