Mint Condition's First Look at the Phoenix Vol. 2 omnibus. It looks just as beautiful as Vol. 1. It drops on 9/19/23.

Jean Grey in the words of Walt Whitman, from his masterpiece Leaves of Grass, "Song of Myself" (51 and 52):

"Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"

"Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged, Missing me one place search another, I stop somewhere waiting for you."

Exactly why I’ve not really read comics or posted much since HIxman started.

I’m glad the franchise did/does well and I have no problems with people enjoying it. But it doesn’t resonate with me at all as an xmen fan and more primarily a jean grey fan. I am not selfish and if stories don’t speak to me, I’m comfortable walking away without holding a grudge. “Power to the franchise” we’re my thoughts as xmen’s stature snd popularity rose under hickman. Even though I didn’t enjoy any of it.

    I just never connected.

Kitty and jeans relationship was one of the best relationships of Bendis run imo. (not that it needed to be openly acknowledged. These two were the lynchpin of the series for years with tons of success.

    Don’t mind me.. just reminiscing.

The past few weeks I have re-read Claremont and Byrne’s Jean as Phoenix stories, Bendis’s All-New X-Men, and now X-Men Red. I really loved this team.

Still burns me a little bit (pun intended) that the cover of an omnibus for a character doesn't feature an accurate depiction of said character's costume - and its not in an artistic statement kid of way...

    I know what you mean.

I was hoping they would use the pic of Dark Phoenix with the Pink Phoenix Raptor whose claws are encircling the Earth.

On the other hand, Yay! for even getting not 1, but 2 Phoenix Omnis and who knows if there is a "3" or "4" coming up?

It bothers me too. I wouldn't buy the standard cover which is even more annoying since the standard cover for the first volume was exquisite.

I like their friendship too and how it was acknowledged that Jean was the first person to comfort Kitty when she was scared and alone. Having Kitty come to the X-Mansion in a taxi cab was a nice homage to Jean's first appearance and show how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I enjoyed their friendship in X-Men Forever as well were both were especially close due to Logan.

I wish I could be as charitable. If the franchise is only becoming popular again (and it should be clarified that it's only becoming popular again with comic readers and the comic industry is incredibly niche now, unlike the 90s or before. No one outside of contemporary comic readers knows about Krakoa) for the wrong reasons and for mischaracterizations, then is it really the X-Men who are getting popular? And can't it lead to some long-term repercussions for the worse? I see the Reddit X-Men page where everyone obsesses over the Krakoa era but they're constantly dissing the older, classic stories and while I don't care much for gatekeeping in fandoms, I have to wonder if they really would like the X-Men in the traditional sense. Many of them don't seem to. I think I'll feel a lot better once this era is completely over.

And like you, for me it's a harder pill to swallow not just as an X-Man fan but as a Jean fan, because out of all the X-Men characters, this era feels especially like an anathema to Jean and what she believes in.

IDK, I think we sometimes do her a disservice in how we think she'll respond in specific situations. I know Krakoa isn't great for many fans of the X-men, but I sometimes wonder if we all forget how much trauma they've all endured. While I love the idea of "protect a world that hates and fears us" in theory, for the characters we follow watching their homes, their families, be eviscerated for continually I don't fought them for wanting to try something different and I don't have doubts that Jean like many who joined the island just wanted a "second" chance.

    Exactatiously.

This is why I wished the writers had spent more time and effort building the new world and working out the nuances of this new Mutant state rather than spending all those months "Subverting expectations" with XoS.

Jean clearly saw and understood the merits of creating a haven for other mutants who just want to live normal happy lives away from the world of abuse and pain they were born into and grew up in. Those who wanted it were given a choice. Nobody was forced against their will to immigrate to Krakoa. Via the gates they could move back and forth freely. And clearly, as we read in the Gala a lot more mutants chose to stay in their birth homes and countries.

And even-so, as an X-Man she knows she has a responsibility to still fight for and "protect a world that hates and fears them" that's why she left the QC and founded her X-Men with Scott. And set up base in the Middle of New York City.

If some want to interpret Krakoa as an example of Mutant segregation...okies, that's valid, singular perspective but it's not the only perspective and the young mutants the Marauders saved from the Russian internment camps would beg to differ.

Agreed. I believe it was very much in Jean's character to feel she'd rather reform the X-Men than stay on the Quiet Council. I liked that tension, especially when she and Scott had that conversation on the moon and she said the people should choose their leaders. With her impending return in Immortal, I've often wondered if that's where things are headed.
