Hal was generally a bit calmer and more level-headed in classic depictions. He always had a rebellious, stubborn streak in him, but it was less "loud, reckless cowboy" and more like what was in Earth One. I think that's what I liked about it. He's still questioning of authority, willfull and adventurous, but in a less over-the-top, cartoonish way. It reminded me a lot of the character when I first got into him and I liked the Moon-style vibe.

With Earth One I like its Hal but I did find its John Stewart in volume 2 underwhelming.

While Hal was at least the protagonist, John really felt shafted by being stuck in the trio with those other astronauts and the red herring that the one of the women alongside him was going to take up the ring instead of him.

Yeah, John's subplot was a major flaw in second volume. And that woman gave up the ring, if I remember right, because she was too mad or something? Was weird stuff that didn't really add anything to the story.

It was also meant to be a trilogy but sadly we didn't get that.

I would have really liked seeing a third entry to GL Earth One.

Yeah its really weird. Like the woman has the ring for half of the book then suddenly she has to give it to John.

I get giving John his own soundboard to interact with but I'm not sure why he didn't just get the ring at the start.

Do we know anything about what the third installment would have explored?

Seconded. GL was the only Earth One series I ever really got attached to.
