    Artist: Gary Frank
    Inker: Cam Smith
    Letterer: Joe Rosen
    Colorist: Glynis Oliver
    Editor: Bobbie Chase

Guest Stars/Supporting Cast: Betty Banner, Ajax, Atlanta, Agamemnon, Paris, Cassie, Achilles, Hector, Ulysses, the Warriors Three
Antagonist: Red Norvell Thor, Siingard and his tribe of Frost Giants, Hoarfen the Wolf.
Synopsis: The Hulk and the Norvell Thor spend the first dozen pages fighting each other, until a stalemate between the party members ends as the Warriors Three push the odds in their favor. We also see Agamemnon make his way to the land of the Frost Giants and makes his re-acquaintance with the leader of a tribe of Frost Giants named Siingard. Cut back to the Hulk and company and the standoff has ended with a make-shift camp. Words are exchanged and we get a small dose of humor when Banner asks Fandrall about where the real Thor is. Volstagg appears and lets it be known that he’s seen Agamemnon outside of Siingard’s castle. The next morning, the group arrives and demands Agamemnon. No dice and a battle ensues. Hector swoops in and grabs the youth and drops him in the Hulk’s arms. Suddenly, both of them are frozen with fear. A giant frost wolf named Hoarfen makes his appearance and mauls them to death as the issue abruptly ends.
Commentary: Cassie comments on Hoarfen echoes my thoughts almost to a tee – there’s just some weird **** in a lot of mythology. I chuckled at the panel on page 17 where Agamemnon is describing the game of baseball to Siingard. Don’t know if it was common knowledge back then, but PAD is a baseball nut. Absolutely loves it. Unless I play it (which I haven’t since grade school), it’s a giant snooze fest. I’ve tried in recent years to give it a try, but it never fails - puts me to sleep about a half hour into a game. It’s goddamn boring. Except the 2016 World Series. Vince McMahon and Dwayne Johnson made a mistake in keeping the XFL alive. Should be an XBL. Gary Frank can really make a turd into a polished turd. His Red Norvell Thor is fantastic. The beard, the outfit, the hammer…I can get into this look over the Kirby costume. (Nothing can make me dislike the Simonson armor, though.) I was in denial about the Hulk and Aggy getting killed. To quote something his past self would say, “NOTHING can kill the Hulk!” Well…

I like this arc, though odd this wasn't counted among Hulk's death by Ewing, heh. Maybe it was because Hela grabbed him.

It was certainly a look that was ahead of its time considering that these days someone walking around with green hair is pretty normal. It’s definitely a cute look on her I’d say.

Come to think of it, I don't think Ewing counted Banner's death in Jenkins/Mckeever's IH #32 either, which was also one of the Leader's death. Maybe because Banner was just closed to death, but decided to turn into Merged/Professor just minutes from it.

Seriously, if this was a "lost" script from the time period excavated from a drawer and finished up, it would have been intended for Web of Spider-Man or something. It reminds me most of the Claremont Wolverine two-parter where the Fixit Hulk appeared.

Yeah I have to agree. She surprisingly looks pretty cute with the short hair look and how she's drawn there.

Made to a comic shop before they closed and got Fixit #1.
I liked it! It took me back to 1988, THIS is how I remember the Gray Hulk; arrogant and snide, not how he was portrayed in the New FF mini.
Favorite part was the page where he overpowered the Kingpin..."Now say it French. Now pig latin." HAH!

    Incredible Hulk #423
    “Hel and Back”
    Cover Date: November 1994
    Sale Date: September 20th, 1994
    Writer: Peter David
    Artist: Gary Frank
    Inker: Joe Rubenstein
    Letterer: Joe Rosen
    Colorist: Glynis Oliver
    Editor: Bobbie Chase

Guest Stars/Supporting Cast: Agamemnon, Betty Banner, Atlanta, Ulysses, Achilles, Paris, Hector, Cassie, the Warriors Three, Red Norvell Thor, Delphi
    Villain: Hela, Hoarfen.
Synopsis: Moments after being mauled and “killed” by Hoarfen last issue, the Hulk and Agamemnon find themselves in the depths of Hel facing an army of dead warriors. Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death introduces herself and explains that they indeed are dead. We also get Agamemnon’s true name (possibly, maybe) as Vali Halfling. The Hulk is still unable to accept that he’s dead and Hela taunts him to depart Hel…if he can. Back outside of Siingard’s castle, the rest of the Pantheon, Betty, Norvell Thor and the Warriors Three do battle against Hoarfen and the Frost Giants. Cut back to Earth, where we see an injured Ulysses trying to give Atlanta and Achilles an update on their mission at Fenway. Paris is in the background and gives a sour face when it’s implied that he may or may not have had something to do with his shield not activating. Back in Hel, the Hulk and Agamemnon battle their way through the masses of dead in what appears to be hours, which turn into days and possibly weeks. We see Banner’s anger getting the best of him in several panels, as his rational voice gives way to aggression and brutishness. After days of fighting, it’s taken its toll and he admits that it is harder to concentrate, his control is slipping. Agamemnon tells him to ignore it and fight as another wave attacks. Hela tells him that they cannot win, but that it’s futile as she can turn time against them. Agamemnon calmly begs her to let them go, that she can wait a little longer. Tearfully, she allows them to leave Hel and the two are vomited out of Hoarfen’s mouth and back to the land of the living. The battle ends as the Hulk breaks its jaw and it scurries away. Norvell whisks the group back to Earth as he and the Warriors Three continue their battle. Agamemnon then tries to make his leave, but Cassie and Hector won’t allow it. He tries bringing it back to Banner, but Banner said he only gave HIS word, not the others. Semantics win the day, and Agamemnon is escorted back to the Mount, threatening dire consequences. The issue ends with Delphi finding her mother (who apparently been the “author” of this storyline, wink-wink) stating that she can’t stay, knowing what horrible things are going to happen. Her mother understands, saying she once had the gift. She says to stay with her as everything plays out, and to let others build new myths.
Commentary: Not how I expected Banner to lose control, but with a tenuous grip on his sanity before and after the “Future Imperfect” events, being killed and fighting for days on end against armies of dead warriors is the rock that cracks the window on the Merged Hulk. (In two issues, we see what shatters it entirely.) Not a fan of Rubenstein’s inks over Gary Frank. It left a scratchy look to it. I forgot about the Agamemnon/Hela interaction. Mildly curious as to how that came about, because the focus was always the Troyjans extending his life.

    Incredible Hulk #424
    “Trial”
    Cover Date: December 1994
    Sale Date: October 18th, 1994
    Writer: Peter David
    Artist: Darick Robertson
    Inker: Ron Boyd
    Letterer: Joe Rosen
    Colorist: Glynis Oliver
    Editor: Bobbie Chase

Guest Stars/Supporting Cast: Betty Banner, Ulysses, Jason, Cassie, Achilles, Hector, Ajax, Paris.
    Villain: Agamemnon
Synopsis: Open to Agamemnon in a scowling, meditating state in a cell. The two Pantheon guards are ignorant of his true identity, and the scowling intensifies as he telepathically calls out to the “endless knights.” We then cut to the Hulk and the Thing doing battle in what appears to be a VR scenario. No fists, using swords instead. Surprisingly, the Hulk is defeated, impaled on his own weapon by a trick move by the Thing…who in reality isn’t Ben Grimm at all, but Ulysses. It was just an exercise to test how well his recovery is going. He inquires about the upcoming hearing but is abruptly cut off. Betty also inquires about it, but is equally brushed off. Meanwhile, Achilles orders the guards away from Agamemnon to talk to him in private. He scolds him about Banner being in the group, that HE should have been left in charge. No response. He threatens to kill him, still nothing. He leaves, telling him that he just lost the only friend he had. Outside the Mount, we find Jason the Renegade walking across the desert in close proximity to the Mount, but intercepted by the Hulk. He claims that despite his status, he’s still Pantheon and that the Hulk is a latecomer, he’s going to be heard in the upcoming trial. Elsewhere, we see Betty and Cassie exchange girl talk, also noting all the bruises she’s acquired from the fight against the Frost Giants. Atlanta interrupts and says the hearing is starting and to be ready in 15 minutes. All parties arrive and the hearing begins. Agamemnon then explains that the Troyjans used their technology to crack his genetic code and he was then able to use it in a formula form to augment his offspring. Turns out his kids were less and less immortal over the generations and he wanted to change that. It turns violent when Atlanta gets frustrated about the deal with Trauma and he cuffs her upside the jaw. Ajax loses his temper but is quickly tamed with an order to sit down. Here, we see Agamemnon’s true colors, despite the appearance of a teenager, he’s a immortal with thousands of years under his belt. Jason the Renegade appears and tells his side of the story, as the Hulk brings up the topic of how anyone who disagreed with him conveniently “disappeared”. Turns out Jason with the hitman of the Pantheon. He was the one who took out the previous Ulysses. Before anything else is divulged, the Mount begins to shake and a cackling Agamemnon states that the Endless Knights are on their way to kill them all.
Commentary: Ennnh. Not a fan of Darick Robertson’s art. And I guess this is where I should go back and do a serious re-read those Pantheon stories to see what Jason was talking about. I have vague recollections of reading them once and not giving two-shits about them, as they cut my monthly Hulk dose in half. So Agamemnon’s origins are still foggy, but we get some insight as to why the deal with the Troyjans occurred, and what Hela called him. He’s the offspring of a god and mortal and his immortality is less and less potent over the generations.

I miss the Pantheon. I'll never understand why their old base has shown up more than them.

    *edit*

I don't count the appearance with Cho

While not a huge fan of the group, I thought they were a good fit for the Merged Hulk to fit in with.
I did think they got a lame send-off in the Maestro mini. Part of me wants to re-read those in one sitting. The other half is asking me if giving myself several paper cuts on my fingers and dipping them in salt water would be more preferable.

Yeah, PAD's Hulk is sadly a little rusty, the Maestro mini included.

I just saw that this run is ending with issue 14. Hopefully they take a bit of a break with any Hulk titles after this run which has been quite the mess.
