I didn't know that Nitro, the guy who caused Civil War by killing the New Warriors, was also the one who killed Mar-Vell. That guy should've been inhibitor collared decades ago.

Well, the article at the link Distraction posted says it was Nitro. And yes, the way I understood it was he got cancer, but his powers made him immune to chemotherapy, so he couldn't be cured and died. Come to think of it, the rest of the Marvels, except Monica and Kamala (because their powers are different) would probably have the same problem. Making Nitro a very dangerous opponent for Carol!

According to the wiki, Nitro threw some sort of toxic gas on him (?) and that's what gave him cancer.

Yeah, I think one of the trades for the Death of Captain Marvel actually includes the issue where he fought Nitro.

I've been hoping for Carol to become entangled with another character in this way for quite some time now. It seems to be a Captain Marvel tradition and gives Carol a different character to play off of constantly.
Not that character I had in mind but we'll see how this one works out...

Marvel Unleashed #1 had Redwing address Chewie by her full name... which, apparently, is Chewbacca Sassy Danvers. Missed opportunity there I reckon, they could've used the MCU name Goose as the middle name. There was even some AIM goons later referring to the group of animals as a gaggle, with one saying that specifically refers to geese. Could've had Chewie comment on that too.
