Guten tag meine freunde! The Kurt Wagner - Nightcrawler Appreciation 2023

I would SO love to see Kurt get an ongoing out of this, it has been so good seeing the fun loving, charming, swashbuckling Nightcrawler back in action. Now if we could just get that under his own name and costume.


Also, please forgive my laziness at the moment...but where did the magical sword come from?

Yes! He’s a hero in his own right, let’s have him adventuring under his own name!

But to answer your question:
It’s a bit complicated but in summary the sword came into being in the recent legion of X and sons of X storyline. A while back Kurt had Magik’s soul sword hidden within his soul, removing it left a gap in the shape of a sword.

Nightcrawler, unbeknownst to him filled that gap with his hope, thus creating the ’hopesword’ which is apparently more powerful than standard magic swords. It was also hinted that Kurt has an affinity to magic here which is why he gels so well with magic items. Margali cursed Kurt and turned him into a monster in order to pull the hope sword from his body and use it for her own nefarious deeds.

But Kurt was cured of the curse and the sword was returned to him which he now can store within his body and use at will.

Speaking of the Hopesword, now I’ve seen more of it I’d actually like this ability to stick around. He doesn’t have to use the sword all the time, I still like Kurt’s teleporting to be his primary combat choice but it’s convenient to be able to pull out a sword when needed instead of lugging one around (or having one just appear in panels with no indication where he got it from or how he carried it).

It’s also a nice little reminder that Kurt does have some affinity to magic although he doesn’t have magic ability and apparently the sword has strong magic so it would be useful against opponents that completely outrank him in power level.

But I wonder how long this ability will last. Every slight power up Kurt’s received has disappeared fairly quickly.

Agreed it continues to be great! I have new questions about the function of the hope-sword and the romance between Kurt and Sable felt more natural in this issue….and adorable.

I am utterly DELIGHTED they included Ororo on this list. Their friendship is a bedrock of the team.

I hated Kurt and Rachel, it felt wrong for both of them. Kurt and Betsy was more in character, they flirted wonderfully with each other.

Of course, in my canon, his first love is bier and Logan, not necessarily in that order.
And I haven’t posted that cover in ages…
