Looking to pick up the first compendium but I see that it doesn't include any of the side stories, like the atom eve mini or guarding the globe, are those important to the main series?

They are fun side stories but not at all essential to the main Invincible plots. They are worth the read but you won't miss anything without them.

FYI, the compendium should contain the short Atom Eve and Rex Splode origin tales. The are (greatly) condensed versions of the story you would get in the Atom Eve mini.

I think the only thing you might miss are the little mentions in invincible about events, but I think they add little side notes telling you what issue it was in right?

You're in for a real treat, my favorite superhero book of all time, it's incredibly consistent. I would recommend the HC Editions if they're within your budget, if not get the trades or it's a long wait for another Compendium.

If you got the money pick up the second one as well and save yourself the trip. This is one of my favorite books. The side stories are truly not needed.
