Preferred Origin For Black Canary?

Thomas retcon was weird (imagine having all of your mothers memories and memories of her having sex with your Dad >_>) but I think the mother-daughter thing ultimately benefited the character in the long run.

Canary is one of the characters that really benefited from the Crisis. Thank god for Peter David, Alan Brennert and Mark Waid for making the mother-daughter transition more straightforward.

Yeah, once you eliminate travelling from Earth-2 to Earth-1 it's easier to incorporate the mother/daughter bit. Having a childless Dinah from Earth-2 coming to Earth-1 and then inventing Canary suddenly having had a daughter with her now dead husband back when she was still on Earth-2 becomes a bit more complicated.

As for the "weird" part of the origin retcon, they had to explain why Black Canary had all these memories / references to her late husband while she had been on Earth-1 in previous stories.

Well, it is typical of Roy's work in terms of all the details being covered.

As for the writers on that story, Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway were both credited for writing issue #219 (part one)


but it was just Roy for issue #220 (part two)

I do wish that DC would give us the "current" version of the Black Canary origin(s) so we could find out if / how much of any part of the New52 version (mother left when Dinah was a child / spent time at dojo / part of Team 7) we're still stuck with.
