Wells also included MJ sitting a dark closet so no one could overhear her or see her talking to Peter, which is usually code for "I have to keep this a secret out of fear of the reaction from whoever could hear/see me." We then see Paul referring to a past confrontation with Peter in ASM 3 and we see the shoving match in ASM 7, so coding Paul as someone whose reactions MJ doesn't want to trigger is all on Wells.

I think the intention had been "MJ is uncomfortable in this situation but we don't want you to know why" - whether it's just JRJR's style, the coloring, or JRJR knowing that Paul is the "threat" and that's subconsciously tinging his art (or a combination thereof), I think it's been a failure in execution. My guess for awhile has been MJ is undercover in some sense keeping track of Paul. Because he invaded the Capitol. More seriously, I think she's upset with Peter about why she's in this situation

In context, that seems more like stage directions than an appeal to the audience, e.g. "don't hint at anything menacing, don't tip at a later reveal, draw him happy."

Yeah. The panel descriptions in a comic script are there for the artist. The audience typically doesn't see them. John Romita Jr. was told to draw him warm and likeable in that panel, and that's what he did.

It does goes to show how inept Zed and by extent Romita Jr are at their jobs. The stage direction and art always made MJ look like she was terrified of Paul and pined for Peter. Is it any wonder I thought he was abusive? At least now I think of him more that he's a simp and a non-entity and MJ wears the balls in the family.

Eh, it felt like he was pretending to be nice. Not like he was actually doing it out of the goodness of his heart. Paul...is a badly written "character". Frankly, it would be better if he didn't exist.
