So they came back before Extermination, but Micabe is referring that cover art. Which is not supposed to be a current look but it's influenced but Yu's X-Men #1 which Rachel was sporting her trench coat look and those hideous Bachalo hound marks. They have since been removed, to our knowledge, and they only appeared as a power signature indicating she's using her tp in X-Factor. Since then her power signature is flames.

I personally miss the hound marks when Rachel used her telepathy, it is a hallmark, you see it and you know who is behind it, the fire... well, there are 300 characters who use fire...

There was a nod to Rachel in the third issue. When Jean is in chains and talking to Maddie, fragments of memories are behind her and they were of Rachel (small portion of her face with hound tattoos), Exodus, Hope, and Jean/Phoenix.

When you think of X-Men multiverse stories, Rachel is one of the first things that comes to the fandom's minds. So I don't think it is coincidence. And spoilers:

Jean initially being dead does not change the fact that Rachel eventually met her and her other parent (Scott) was still alive.
