Not technically a first issue and not even a full-length comic, but Spider-Man’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 is, well, amazingly perfect!

Definitely, my next choice would be...

Reading many of the choices in this thread, maybe the title of the board ("Comics Should Be Good") isn't properly recognized?

What others said: TMNT 1 and Amazing Fantasy 15. Sandman 1 and maybe Bone 1.

If you’re not talking about #1’s, my vote is for Cap #444, and Brubaker’s Captain America volume which began ‘Winter Soldier’.

OMG! If it does count, then it should be at the top of the list (IMHO):

As much as I love TMNT #1, does anyone else think that a self-contained story that straightforward could ever be published today? Especially for a first issue? I'm not usually one to complain about multi-issue arcs, too much, but there's something about one-and-dones that I miss dearly.
Keep in mind that you have about as much chance of changing my mind as I do of changing yours.

I don't know. But I appreciate a good cliffhanger. A done and one issue must be really really good to get me to buy the next issue. A mediocre issue with a good cliffhanger has a better chance to be bought.

I'm pretty sure the "photographer" credit is a tribute to Gene Colan, Bill Everett and Wally Wood.
