The cover doesn't actually say they are heat beams. Perhaps they are ruby colored beams of concussive force, like Cyclops', because obviously that is way more logical than shooting heat from your eyes.

Congrats ictrombone and thanks to Bryan for the vote! This was another cover I was considering, although it doesn't actually have eyes, technically it counts as an optic blast. I remember the letters page a few issues later where a reader said it was as if Byrne's then wife Andrea, who works as a photographer, went to the Baxter Building and shot it, it looked so realistic. The editors responded that no, it was a render by famed Marvel technical illustrator Eliot R. Brown.
