The TV characters mentioned have been running characters in TV shows. While technically, the Stooges and Stan and Ollie starred in short theatrical films, they were basically the same characters in most of their shorts with the same mannerisms and catch phrases. The resulting work was basically episodic comedy.

But since the title of the questionable list was "10 Greatest TV Comedy Characters Of All Time", I don't know if people would normally include characters from movie shorts just because they were seen in reruns on TV.

It might be a hoot if we let everybody decide whether they want to depend on the basic idea or adhere to a perceived restriction. The universe is safe if we think Curly qualifies. Probably even Shemp. Joe and Curly Joe however would give me doubt.

Well, if we're opening it up to greatest comedy characters in any medium, I'd like to nominate the world's first recorded comedy double act: Dionysus and Xanthias from Aristophanes' The Frogs.

This was tough because there are a lot of funny characters on TV.

    Archie Bunker
    Red Forman
    Al Bundy
    Gilligan
    Lucille Ball
    George Jefferson
    Fred Sanford
    Cliff Claven
    Barney Fife
    Gomer Pyle

Hey, all I was doing was responding to this:
