    Default Writers Having Favourite Characters

It’s clear that Gillen loves Sinister - he was a key villain in his Uncanny X-Men run, has been a feature in almost every issue of Immortal X-Men, and is the focal point of his crossover/event books Sins of Sinister and The Sinister Four. Love it or hate it, he’s put a lot of effort into revamping and promoting the character.

This got me thinking - what are other examples of writers clearly having a favourite character in a run? And did they work out well or not?

    Claremont - Storm
    Lobdell - Iceman
    Nicezia - Cable
    Morrison - Emma Frost
    Whedon - Shadowcat
    CY/CK - X-23
    Bendis - Shadowcat / Dazzler
    Hickman - Emma Frost
Duggan - Rogue / Emma Frost
I was trying to do too much and not doing any of it as well as I could. But I've had a change of mind... though not everyone shall enjoy it. I will.

Morrison and Hickman loved Emma and they did right by her,
Bendis made Teen Jean very entertaining,
Carey worked well with Rogue but I’m ambivalent about the results,
Kitty seems to have attracted the attention of many writers: Claremont, her creator generally does well with her, Guggenheim was a disaster of epic proportions, Duggan was not my thing but I’m sure others enjoyed it.

Ommadon: “By summoning all the dark powers I will infest the spirit of man So that he uses his science and logic to destroy himself. Greed and avarice shall prevail, and those who do not hear my words shall pay the price. I'll teach man to use his machines, I'll show him what distorted science can give birth to. I'll teach him to fly like a fairy, and I'll give him the ultimate answer to all his science can ask. And the world will be free for my magic again.”

Claremont with Storm and Psylocke both. Sage later on. Whedon with Kitty was another obvious example.

Not entirely sure if it's really favoritism or perhaps editorial forcing him to go back to the character because of his past success with him, but it appears to be the case with Spurrier and Legion in X-men Legacy and the current title.

Which worked out quite well for Legion all things considered. The character became more established again, had his characterization streamlined and even showcased that he can work as protagonist. Something which might have even played a role in getting the Legion life action show greent lit.

On a lesser but still noticable basis Spurrier clearly loves writing Doctor Nemesis.

Guggenheim's Kitty/Colossus fanfic has made me somewhat leery of writers having favorite characters, though I am grateful Magik seems to be a favorite of so many writers.

Didn't Ed Brisson try very, very hard to push Glob? I remember that, and it made me hate the character.

Oh, yeah. He didn't do Glob any favours in the long run.

I don't think I can think of writers that *don't* have favorites.

Peter David seems fond of Madrox.

I have grown similar wary of writers expressing characters to be their favorits, because of how often it has resulted in questionable results.

Especialy when it's mediocre writers trying to "improve" their favorits who might be underused or in dire need of repair work, making the situation for them worse.

    Percy - Wolverine

Clearly. The guy self inserts himself into the character.

Idk about 'favorite' but Nicieza was also pretty fond of Gambit back in the 90s, which resulted in some of his best stories.
