The Geneginere is such a weird character to do this with. Yes, he was the guy behind the enslavement of mutants back on Genosha. But he was doing it because he was afraid that mutants were too powerful, and would take over the country despite being a tiny minority of the people being mutants, which is kind of what ended up happening. He believed this strongly enough that he wasn't willing to make exceptions for his own family. He didn't have any delusions of grandeur or desires to kill people to take over the world, and even worked with the X-men to stop Cameron Hodge. He died doing that, too.
Point is, he was a terrible person who did terrible things, but he had some depth to him. This story has made him out to be some kind of weird Mr. Sinister-lite.
