I thought it was cute and fun when I watched it, too, although I remember the ending making a sequel harder? Maybe I’m misremembering.

Yeah, while it could be possible to do another live action Pokemon movie set in the same world (like how Zathrura is technically part of the Jumanji film series despite not sharing any other characters), the titular character is more or less written out of the first one, and he was arguably the driving force of popularity behind the film.
