I adore Kitty/Kate. I feel like she's actually a tricky character to write without making her totally obnoxious... Claremont, Whedon and Ellis are some of the few writers who get her voice and attitude right in my opinion.

I'm hoping for good things for her in 2023 - I must say I don't love her in Marauders and I'm ready for her to join a new X-team.

Also, some quality time with her BFFs Rachel and Illyana is long overdue.

Yes definitely! Although Kate and Kurt at least appear together regularly on the Council, even if they barely interact. I think the last time Kate spoke to Rachel, Illyana or even Logan was when she was resurrected?

That would be correct. They all reunited and Illyana showed up with A Mariachi band she had playing a song for them(De Contrabando), that when translated was about being secretly in love with someone and wanting to be with them, even if it's in secret.


The lyrics to De Contrabando in English are

I think I'm missing a number of decades of Kate's best stories. In the Krakoan Era, she's red queen of the Hellfire Trading Club (despite having...no or little business acumen?), traveling through time with her Mauraders to save ancient mutants for...very few logical reasons, or traveling the world as a mutant-saving pirate and girlbossing it with her one-time enemy Emma. It's very, very hard for me not to see her as a Mary Sue and I really want to believe that she's been better utilized in prior stories. The relationship she has with Magik I see posted above makes me want to believe she's had some really good stories with emotional investment.

If you've never read it, I highly recommend ALL of Chris Claremont's run on Uncanny X-Men - Kitty is very much a central character from the moment she first appears during the Dark Phoenix Saga and remains so until she leaves that book and moves to Excalibur, where she's also a focus character and that I also recommend.

If you're looking for something shorter and self-contained, Kitty Pryde & Wolverine is pretty good and extremely important to the character's evolution, and the early 2000's Mechanix is also a very fun mini.

All of Claremont is the best starting point for sure. Her time with the Guardian's had some nice moments in it as well, and her recent Marauder's run doesn't get as much love as it should. But I agree here, always start with Claremont.

Kitty is one of the characters that has gotten a lot of focus in the Krakoan era, but doesn't feel like the character from the last few decades. Her voice has seemed off to me in everything I've read her in. She's one of my favourite X-Men so I hope she gets a new lease of life soon...she's written like she's having a mid-life crisis. I'd also like the mystery of why she can't use the Krakoan gates to be wrapped up soon, because it feels like it's been entirely forgotten.
