Reserved my commentary on the new Peach Momoko design for SHADOWKAT to let it sink in a bit.

Firstly, it's absolutely criminal that when given the variety of costuming options for Pirate Kate the Red Queen by Matteo Lolli, that Kate was stuck in one look for her entire tenure as a Marauder.



On to the Peach Momoko design for ShadowKat: On its own it isn't bad at all. However, and perhaps this is the point, there is very little about it that says Kitty/Kate Pryde (except perhaps the colorations and bodytype, the latter seems out the window once not under Momoko's pen), nor X-MEN in particular. I do appreciate the nod to the duality of Pirate Kate and Ninja Kat with the different swords. Perhaps when sheathed they create the X for team branding?
This could be a strong redesign for Kwannon/Psylocke (to get her out of the Braddock worn suit), or for an entirely new character but it doesn't read as "The X-Man formerly known as Kitty Pryde" much at all. But, again, perhaps in FALL OF X, that's a storyline point.
With regard to the changing of the "C" to "K" for ShadowKat...I wish they had taken a page from AGE OF X (?) and just had her mature into the codename SHADOW.
In conclusion: Bring.Back.Her.Curls. (said in faux-Rupaul)

And winner and still champion of the "too briefly worn costumes of Pryde in the modern era" remains the GUARDIANS look by Kris Anka. It would easily have been adapted as an X suit or even amped up and ninjafied since it already has the built in face mask.

I'll admit I'm also a codename nazi LOL. It's a really tiny pet peeve but you're on a superhero team where everyone has codenames, so get one dammit . Bring on Shadowkat, the White Queen, Phoenix and Troia!

Me too. I hate that Jean, Kitty, Dani Moonstar and Donna are almost always called by their names instead of their code names. You never see this with male characters but these 4 specifically can't seem to shake bad habit. My prediction with ShadowKat? It won't be used beyond the issue it debuts in unfortunately.

I wonder if Kate will last or if Kitty will return? Or will "Kat" emerge - wasn't that used by Storm referring to her at one point?

New costume....it's alright...I guess. I really REALLY liked that Kitty had graduated/matured to the Red Queen/Red Captain. the pirate theme is so intrinsically Kitty going back to Uncanny X-Men 153. Plus her Red Captain costume could have easily been fitted into a ninja style costume but maintaining her pirate feel. Ninjas are fun and all but a bit over done. Pirates....we need more pirates and I think that could have fit nicely into whatever they are wanting to do.
I prefer Dread Pirate Kate to Ninjakitty.

And CURLS DAMMIT! She needs her long curls!

I really hate ninja Kitty/Kate Pryde. It needs to not be a thing. Claremont never could figure out how to make Kitty a more mature character and maybe ninja Kitty was fun in the 80s, but I just find it so cringe.

I love Ninja Kitty because of the original way Ogun mentally impressed the abilities of a fully skilled Ninja onto her in the first place -- well, that and the fact that said bestowed skills complement her mutant abilities exactly; to perfection. I wouldn't change a thing about her save for her atrocious Jheri Curl and pointless hand tattoos
