Bette was in Legion of Bloom today. It seems Flamebird just can't accept that Titans West is history...

Oh dear! I 'd rather not say, because I'd be laughed at, or 'wrong'.

Thank you. Okay, I am often behind in comics, sometimes even a few months so if this has happened or 'revealed', okay.

In Batman INC, there is a character who showed up called 'Oryx'

I don't believe their identity has been revealed but

I think it is a new version of Flamebird, Bette Kane.

She finally got tired of Batwoman and the Bat family to take her seriously and after her exile to West Point, she is back

    in secret.

What else? Well Bette has been imagined as her own "Batwoman" at least twice, both in the Silver Age (before the new Batgirl, Babs, ovviously through Alfred's imaginary stories)

and somewhere 20 years or so ago in a Titans Tomorrow.

The colors of Oryx are pretty similar to Bette's latter version of Batwoman.

I have only seen a few panels of that issue so I'm not getting a full story perhaps.
But unlike other attempts to remake Bette (Hawkfire)

this one seems to be a better idea, if I've got it.

Although there is no specific canon, Bette or Betty was a natural athlete, who was trained by:

    Batwoman 1
    Batman/Bat family
    Batwoman 2
various other characters, possibly, through Teen Titans.

She should not longer be the untrained novice!

Michael Conrad on twitter mentioned that he and Cloonan originally did have plans to use Bette Kane starting in issues 7-8 - she would have been in the Penguin's club, and joined up with the group from there. But editorial had other plans. He hopes that she'll get used again soon after Legion of Bloom!

Default "Oryx" as Bette Kane, Flamebird, Hawkfire, "Bat-Girl"

Another reason I felt the character and her costume colors suggested Bette Kane
    oryx.jpg
is when I looked at the symbolism behind an oryx (a deer or gazelle like animal btw)

I found: In general, Oryx symbolism is a sign that you are doing what you were born to do. In other words, this spirit animal says that the career or vocation you’ve chosen is in perfect alignment with your life’s purpose.

And I thought in some ways, Bette has represented this about herself, that she always felt called to be this person, crimefighting, even though she could never be seen as valuable to others (and personally, this is the reason why I relate to her so much, same for me in my own life).

Despite the decades of shotty treatment by the heroes around her, the constant belittling or suggestions that she back out, she has now ended up

"doing what she felt she was born to do"
So I hope it could end up being true. What a twist, especially with such an underused gem of a character.
