House passes a bill that could lead to a TikTok ban if Chinese owner refuses to sell

One good thing about this, if it passes the Senate ... Chaya Raichek/Libs of TikTok won't have an online home anymore.

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is putting together an investor group to buy TikTok

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he is putting together an investor group to try to buy TikTok.

Mnuchin’s statements come shortly after the House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill that would force ByteDance to divest TikTok or the social media site would face a ban in the U.S.

“I think the legislation should pass and I think it should be sold,” Mnuchin told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday. “It’s a great business and I’m going to put together a group to buy TikTok.”
So just how bad could this get?

I posted this in the News and Politics Thread as well...

Don Lemon was supposed to have a new show coming out on X/Twitter. For the first show he interviewed Elon Musk. Musk didn't like teh questions asked so now the show has been cancelled before it's been aired.

    Choose a number between 1 and 5 with 1 being absolutely fantastic and 5 being a f**king s**t-show.
Now, take that number and triple it.

"Not Gay Jared" Monroe, the ex-sidekick for Steven Crowder from the "Louder With Crowder" Show, accuses Crowder of maintaining toxic workplace.

I used to think Crowder was mostly putting on an act ( and I sorta still do), but...he more I hear about Crowder, the more horrible he seems to be as a human being.

Sorry, but it is hard not laugh at this blockhead...

He was on about how the part of his NDA that silences his "Free Speech..." does not have an expiration date.

It's just like "Man, I have to break something to you about exactly how this whole "Free Speech..." thing works..."

I don't think he truly believe the "free speech" claim...I think he just said that to get support from that corner of the interwebs. Look how some folks are trying to frame the Candace Owens firing as a free speech issue...

The Crowder thing is descending into drama. Gerald Morgan posted a half hour video claiming that Monroe and Crowder's ex-wife have teamed up to conduct a PR smear campaign against Steven in order for Hillary to get more money out of Steven. And that may be true, but it's interesting that he didn't mention the other ex-employees and conversative media figures that have outted Crowder as being a not great person.

Meta blocked a newspaper’s critical report about it on Facebook and its other social sites for hours, sparking a backlash that intensified after the company appeared to subsequently block links to the website of an independent journalist who republished the report.

The controversy began Thursday morning when users noticed that all links to the non-profit newspaper the Kansas Reflector had been flagged as a cybersecurity threat and their posts were removed. About seven hours later, the paper said, most of its links had been restored, save for one — a column that had criticized Facebook and accused it of suppressing posts related to climate change.

Meta apologized to the Reflector and its readers on Thursday for what the company’s communications chief, Andy Stone, called a “an error that had nothing to do with the Reflector’s recent criticism of Meta.”
    Sure, sure.

But on Friday, users who attempted to share the column on Facebook, Instagram or Threads, were shown a warning that it violated community guidelines. That seemed suspicious to Marisa Kabas, an independent journalist in New York, who asked the Reflector for permission to publish the text of the column on her own website, the Handbasket.

“I thought it would be a cool experiment,” Kabas told CNN on Friday. Around 1pm ET, she published the story on her own site, “in an attempt to sidestep Meta’s censorship,” she wrote in a preface to the column.

She then shared her post on Threads. “A couple minutes later, I got an alert that it had been flagged and taken down for malicious content,” Kabas told CNN.

Kabas’s post was banned from all Meta platforms for several hours Friday. And for about two hours, she said, all of the links to her site were blocked. Her links were all restored by late afternoon Friday, she said.

Brazil Supreme Court justice orders investigation of Elon Musk over fake news and obstruction

A crusading Brazilian Supreme Court justice has included Elon Musk as a target in an ongoing investigation over the dissemination of fake news, and has opened a separate investigation into the U.S. business executive for alleged obstruction.

In his decision, Justice Alexandre de Moraes noted that Musk on Saturday began waging a public “disinformation campaign” regarding the top court’s actions, and that Musk continued the following day — most notably with comments that his social media company X would cease to comply with the court’s orders to block certain accounts.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX who took over Twitter in late 2022, accused de Moraes of suppressing free speech and violating Brazil’s constitution, and noted on X that users could seek to bypass any shutdown of the social media platform by using VPNs, or virtual private networks.

Musk will be investigated for alleged intentional criminal instrumentalization of X as part of an investigation into a network of people known as digital militias who allegedly spread defamatory fake news and threats against Supreme Court justices, according to the text of the decision. The new investigation will look into whether Musk engaged in obstruction, criminal organization and incitement.
