"Back to normal" is subjective since Musk took over.

I used to be able to see tweets without being logged into the very old twitter I haven't used in forever, I cannot now. I'd think that ads being viewed by non-members paid him just as much as those viewed by members, but after pissing away so many advertisers he needs more.

It seems normal to me now. So that means I click on a thread about John Severin's art on a western comic from the 50's and I scroll down and there's some "porn bot" there...

What Musk needs is to unload Twitter unto someone else, quick. He took on something he can't handle and it's destroying him and he's destroying it.

He would loose 90% of his investment if he sold now. I read on a blog we are in the "singing Daisy" phase of Twitter.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

That's actually quite sad if true.

Everyone is just pretty much waiting for a well moderated alternative to appear. Everyone I know is ready to jump ship as soon as one starts to take off, but the problem is each of the major alternatives has so far proven problematic. Blue Sky, for example, has serious issues with content moderation to protect its users from racism, as well as the backing of Dorsey, who's tech-broness helped land us in this mess in the first place.

Spoutible's Bouzy is giving serious warning signs with his twitter presence that he's not all that dissimilar from Elon in the way he runs Spoutible.

And Meta's incoming twitter alternative is ... well ... tied to Meta. And let's be honest, no one wants to give facebook any more of their data.

And that's before we get into the reasons Mastodon hasn't taken off.

Not quite. Many people, including me, cannot reply, DM or "like" right now.

Judge blocks U.S. officials from tech contacts in First Amendment case

The injunction came in response to a lawsuit brought by Republican attorneys general in Louisiana and Missouri, who allege that government officials went too far in their efforts to encourage social media companies to address posts that they worried could contribute to vaccine hesitancy during the pandemic or upend elections. The Trump-appointed judge’s move could upend years of efforts to enhance coordination between the government and social media companies.

The injunction was a victory for the state attorneys general, who have accused the Biden administration of enabling a “sprawling federal ‘Censorship Enterprise’” to encourage tech giants to remove politically unfavorable viewpoints and speakers, and for conservatives who’ve accused the government of suppressing their speech. In their filings, the attorneys general alleged the actions amount to “the most egregious violations of the First Amendment in the history of the United States of America.”
The Biden White House and Google, which is among the companies named in the suit, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Facebook parent company Meta declined to comment, and Twitter replied with an automated message containing a poop emoji.

I'm a Mastodon user and I can attest the reasons why it hasn't taken off were that they tried too hard to avoid giving idiots clout, but it makes it hard to communicate with others, putting you on an island.

Instagram’s Threads: all the updates on the new Twitter competitor

From what we know so far, Threads is “Instagram’s text-based conversation app” where “communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow.” The app is closely tied to Instagram, meaning you’ll get to use the same username across both apps, as well as quickly follow all of the accounts you’ve been following on Instagram.

Ottawa, Quebec pull advertising, escalating showdown with Facebook and Instagram

OTTAWA – The federal and Quebec governments will stop advertising on Meta-owned platforms Facebook and Instagram as the conflict between the company and Ottawa heats up over legislation that would force web giants to share revenues with news publishers.

“Facebook has decided to be unreasonable, irresponsible, and started blocking news,” Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez told reporters Wednesday flanked by Bloc Québécois MP Martin Champoux and NDP MP Peter Julian.

Shortly after, Quebec Premier François Legault announced his government would follow suite and stop advertising on Facebook “in solidarity with the media”. “No company is above the law,” he added on Twitter.

Zuck just copying other platforms again. It’s funny someone mentioned the porn bots on Twitter, because the anti-LGBTQ moderation on Meta and Google owned platforms is what got and keeps me on Twitter and off them. Meta will moderate itself into irrelevance like Google+ did. Enough of the people I follow on Twitter have content that gets banned on those platforms. After the Tumblr purge, Twitter became the place for LGBTQ creators and artists. Yeah, I have to stumble on some gross hetero sex and porn bots, but it’s worth it.
